Re: ADSB-B in and out
I got the quote for the the installation of GDL-82 and it is about $3500 - $1900 for the device and rest for labor/minor other stuff.

Law of supply and demand, I guess. It sure does sound like gouging to me, though.

Re: ADSB-B in and out
Yup. The GDL-82 is an inline install with the existing antenna, then add power. In the Sting, I'd remote mount under the seats, run the existing antenna cable to the GDL-82 and a new cable from the GDL-82 to the antenna. Four hours to install I'd guess.

Re: ADSB-B in and out
Well I can’t really do that myself on a SLSA plane , can I?

Re: ADSB-B in and out
Sure you can. FAR 43.3(d) allows an A&P to supervise about any kind of work. Just find an A&P that will work with you. In this case, ADSB is more of a technical install than aviation related maintenance so you could probably do the work yourself and pay an A&P a couple hours to check your work.

Certainly sounds like price gouging to me as well.Scooper wrote:Law of supply and demand, I guess. It sure does sound like gouging to me, though.
I fear it's only going to get worse as the deadline approaches for the ten's of thousands who have yet to equip.
For that kind of money you could search farther out for an avionics shop and make a cross country trip out of it. Could be fun.
Re: ADSB-B in and out
The thing is they seem to be pretty much in-line with other shops as far as prices - should have seen the price the dealer is asking

Re: ADSB-B in and out
Btw. Are you sure 4 hours would be enough ?
The quote I got was for:
Install and wire Garmin GDL 82 ADS-B Out,
Install GA 35 GPS Antenna & Create
Approved Ground Plane for Composite
Aircraft
15 hours total.

Re: ADSB-B in and out
I’m sorry but there’s no way on earth a GDL-82 could take 15 hours to install unless the installer is Stevie Wonder.Warmi wrote:Btw. Are you sure 4 hours would be enough ?

Re: ADSB-B in and out
If you can fly to IL and help me to install that thing , we can split the difference

Just out of curiosity have you tried this site? I’ve not used it but it was posted on our SportCruiser forum.

Re: ADSB-B in and out
Thanks Warmi for sharing your estimate. Gulf Coast Avionics (Tampa Florida area) has the GDL-82 on sale for $1695.00. Your quote of $1900 for the unit seems pretty high. Interesting that it requires a new antenna and installation of a ground plane. Your Sting is younger than mine so I'm sure I'd need those things too. I'm interested in doing some of the work and finding an A&P to work with me and maybe get it done far closer to the $2500 mark, but I haven't found that guy yet.

Re: ADSB-B in and out
Actually the device is $1795 so only about 100 bucks more ...I am getting some other work done and I mistakenly included other minor costs.
Anyway, the real killer here is labor , if almost doubles the cost ...and it seems that unless you do it yourself, you just gonna have to pay ,maybe a little less here or a bit more there but still ...

Re: ADSB-B in and out
Your existing transponder antenna should already have a ground plane and the GDL-82 installation manual states that the existing antenna should be able to be reused. If you don't have a ground plane, you can get one for $10 online. Also, installing the GPS antenna is dead simple on a Sting. Just mount it on top of the panel.

Re: ADSB-B in and out
True. But not all avionics installs can be done by an A&P. Some have to be done by an authorized repair station. And, to further complicate things, if installing in an SLSA under an LoA, the LoA will specify what certification is required to do the mod. It's entirely up to the aircraft manufacturer to set those limits.dstclair wrote:FAR 43.3(d) allows an A&P to supervise about any kind of work.
