Fellow pilots,

You may have heard that the new ICAO flight plan format goes live next week. Most of what you enter for VFR flights is the same as what you’re used to from the old domestic flight plan form (though things may go in different places).

What’s completely different are the equipment codes. In my SportStar N24AV, for example, we used to file “/U” (for VHF-radio, VOR, Mode C transponder, and ILS equipped). Now, our multiple codes are “S” (for standard VHF comm, VOR, and ILS equipped), plus “E” (for Mode S Extended Squtter, altitude, and ID transponder), plus “B2” (for 1090 MHz ADS-B “out” capability).

I’ll be putting the new form on the AvSport website, and will post the URL here when it's up. I think this new form should also be the topic of a future EAA webinar.

I’m Garmin G3X, equipped, no external IFR navigator, with ADSB in/out, am I still /G? I haven’t looked at the ICAO coding yet.

Nope, not after 27 August. /G doesn't exist anymore.

Instructions for filling it out may be found in the Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) Chapter 5, Section 1, Paragraph 5-1-9.

Note that the old domestic flight plan, FAA Form 7233-1 (as described in AIM Chapter 5, Section 1, Paragraph 5-1-8) is no longer to be used.

I just looked and G is listed for GNSS. My Sling, according to ICAO should be an SLG2/G,C or S? It’s teally confusing, well, at least to me.

You have a certified GPS receiver?

First off, I misspoke about /G. It still exists, and refers (I think) to a certified Global Navigation Satellite System receiver (which encompasses GPS, GLONASS, BDS, IRNSS, or Galileo).

That said, you now will use multiple codes. Perhaps S to indicate standard navcomm and ILS equipment, plus a code to indicate transponder code, and another to indicate GNSS capability, and perhaps yet another for ADS-B in and/or out.

Confused yet? If not, I'm not doing my job.

Assuming that you have a Mode C transponder, navcom, and your GPS is panel mounted and TSO compliant (not a portable), I'm guessing you would file /S, C, and G.

I don’t have a nav com, just dual G3X Touch with internal GPS and a GPS 20A WASS position source, and a GTX45R x-ponder.

Then, what do you use for VHF comm? Also doesn't tell me much, since I don't know whether that particular xponder is Mode C, Mode S, or Extended Squitter.

I’ve got a GTR200 com radio. The GTX45R, Transponder type: Mode A/C, S and ES, ADSB in/out.

Since you appear to have a completely Garmin panel, I suggest you check their website. They have a matrix showing ICAO codes for each of their different models.

In truth I don't yet even know what ICAO stands for, but Sporty's Fast 5 e-mail this morning included this info on the subject:
