iPhone 6+

Went to my local Apple store today to look at the new iPhones. My sense is that the 6+ will be a very nice device for use in some of smaller LSA cockpits. Not sure if EFB vendors or not will exploit the built in barometer to give us real vs GPS altitude (in non-pressurized planes that is) or not. However I hope Garmin (I used the Pilot app), Foreflight and WingX bring out optimized versions of their applications for the 6+ as I think it will make a nice offering. I currently use a iPad mini (in my DA40) and there are times that it is just to big for me, it does not fit well when attach with a RAM mount or fit well on a knee pad holder. I think the 6+ may be just the right size. In my casual perusal of both the 6 and 6+ they seemed noticeably faster than my current iPhone 5S which I think uses the same CPU as my iPad Mini.

I'm not sure how accurate it is, but there's some reports of the 6+ bending: http://news.yahoo.com/video-shows-just- ... 26517.html

Are there any other features that you'd like to see in a 6/6+ sized package? A lot of those things (true GPS altitude) are pretty easy to implement.

OUCH!

Then again, I can't imagine carrying any iPhone without a pretty rugged case. Otterboxes have saved each of my iPhones too many times to count.

Oh, and you can bet CTLSi is about to inform us about how sucky everything Apple is.

Why would you put a several hundred dollar device in a pocket that puts stress on it in the first place? In the video posted, you can see the tester's hands shaking trying to bend it. If I apply that much force I guarantee I can bend or break any smartphone out there.

This falls under the umbrella of "user abuse", IMO.

As in all things, take care of your stuff, and it will take care of you.

Interesting video.

I think Apple's emphasis on thinness should have run it's course.

As I say, my iDevices go in cases immediately, most often Otterboxes. Right now the iPad Mini I'm typing this on is in one, as is my 5s. As will my eventual 6 or 6+ - as soon as my AT&T contract allows.

I always thought Apple was missing an opportunity by not selling "ruggedized" models of their products, much like Sony did with their Walkman. I'd opt for it!

Then again, 10 million sold so quickly is nothing to sneeze at - maybe they DO know what they're doing!

Eddie,

Which is your favorite, the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6+ ?
I am thinking the 6+ (with cover), as a good backup for my iPad Air (Foreflight and WingX Pro).

I have not yet seen a 6+ in the flesh. I would like a phone that can fit in a shirt pocket even in a sturdy case - the 6+ may be a bit big for that.

But tapping this out on my 5s right now sure has me longing for more screen real estate.

That's what I am thinking also.
The typing keys are too small on my iPhone 4 and I don't think it would be much better on a iPhone 5s. I am due for a new phone and will make a choice soon on either a 6 or 6+.
Besides the small key size issue, more "screen real estate" would be very beneficial for viewing a moving map using WingX Pro or Foreflight, used as a backup of course.

For ME, a 5.5" screen is too big to easily carry around as an every day phone without having a European Man Bag. My current 4" iPhone is a great backup and provides more viewable area than the Garmin 396/496 that are/were in many of our planes. I'll be going with a 4.7" which pushes the limit on size for ME for a phone that easily fits in my pocket.

Very good points. Thanks.

I always wear pants with cargo pockets, I have not found a smartphone yet that doesn't fit in a good sized cargo pocket.

Benefits of on IT job are looser dress standards than in a lot of work environments.

My neighbor couldn't wait to shove his new iPhone 6+ under my nose. (We are divided, religiously, over Android vs Apple)
"Um, Dave. Why is the screen black?"
His phone didn't survive the ride home. Now he is in a months long queue waiting for a replacement.
