Summer Flying Adventure - LSA does cross country

Post by ct4me »

I'm jealous. Two CT Fliers (brothers) have started a Summer Flying adventure that sounds like great fun. They left Tucson a few days ago and will be doing Alaska, then OSH, then Burning Man! They are flying a CTLS and a CTLSi. Can LSA do cross-country?... you bet!
Here is their SPOT track, so you can follow along...

Are they going to land at Burning Man? The airstrip set up there looks a little dodgy.

My understanding is they will be landing there. I did it several years back. I think there may have been 125 aircraft. From a flying/landing perspective it's a non-event. The problem is the blowing sand/dust. We're planning to go up within a couple of years again. A good idea may be to wrap sensitive parts of the plane with Saran Wrap. Like that stuff they use on pallets.

Good to know, I've always wanted to go to Burning Man and flying in sounds pretty amazing. How do you manage the dust? It seems a cover could help, or could just get sand under it and flap around acting like sandpaper against every surface. I know some of those dust storms there last all day and would make flying impossible and could do some real damage to airplanes parked on the playa. Is the soil hard enough to keep tie down stakes in place?

The CT-Duo just landed in Point Barrow!... the Northernmost point in the US. The Arctic Ocean! The flight started earlier today in Anchorage. I was watching the FAA weather cams in Barrow. It went from partly sunny and beautiful to this in about 15 minutes, just as they approached Barrow. wow
