Re: taking my checkride today, or tomorrow
A good book suggestion, "The Killing Zone - Second Edition" by Paul Craig. It's available on iBooks. Basically it explains key risk factors for pilots with less than 350 hours. I'm in that risk zone myself and reading the book for the second time. My personal feeling is that understanding...

Liberty Aviation Museum and lake erie islands
I wanted to give a little write up about this area because I think it has a lot to offer for pilots especially and it would make for a really cool weekend trip. Maybe I'm just not in the loop enough but this really seems like a hidden gem to me and I'd love to see more people enjoy the area as I hav...

Re: taking my checkride today, or tomorrow
1) Congratulations! 2) Just what we need - another know-it-all pilot! 3) How did the clearing turn thing work out? Well I hope I'm not coming across as a know it all, I certainly don't think that or want to be perceived as that. Just wanted to express that I felt well prepared and confident in my a...

I guess as long as people get called out that has the same effect. It is definitely very important to do though. First impressions leave a big impact.

Wouldn't it be best if we referred to FAR's more?
As a new pilot I've noticed that there are a lot of times where I'll read a post (not just here) where someone refers to a regulation or states something as a regulation with no reference to the actual regulation number. After spending so much time reading through the FAR AIM I realized that there w...

Re: taking my checkride today, or tomorrow
Hey guys, thanks for the words of advice. Ended up doing the checkride on Saturday and I passed. As I anticipated, the DPE is a pretty laid back guy so he wasn't looking to grill me during the oral. I think I was very well prepared regardless so it went smoothly. The flight portion went well as well...

taking my checkride today, or tomorrow
Kind of a big mix of nervousness and excitement. I've spent so much time flying and studying. I have read through more material and memorized more information than I ever did in the course of getting my engineering degree and I feel well prepared. I just hope I don't get the jitters or anything. Any...

Re: Young Eagles Mid Air
I was pretty bummed to hear about this. The young eagles is such an awesome concept and I just can't imagine what the parents of that 14 year old are going through. Oddly enough it sounds like the pilot of the searey had another searey go down a couple years ago at sun n, fun. Apparently a searey ha...

Re: Do you enjoy flying in bumpy wind, thermals, etc.
All I can add is that taking your checkride on a hot, bumpy day is usually a good thing. The bumps cover up your jitters and the examiner will want to get the ride over as soon as possible. Worked for me and my friends. Funny you should mention that because that is really what caused me to write th...

Re: "Unofficial" Grass Runway
You may begin wondering why you don't use the grass all the time. <s> the only reason I know of to ever land a tailwheel on pavement is because you have no option for grass or you want to maintain proficiency for landing on pavement. I don't understand why all GA airports don't have grass strips ne...

Do you enjoy flying in bumpy wind, thermals, etc.
Simple question do you still enjoy flying when the plane is getting pushed around? Reason I ask - I'm a couple weeks from my check ride and I have been in training for 5 months or so and probably close to 40 hours (haven't tallied up lately). Before that I have been flying a powered paraglider for 3...

Just how much of the written did you actually learn?
I'm in the process of final preparation for taking my written test. It certainly seems like one of those the more you know the more you realize how little you know kind of situations. I really enjoy learning about anything aviation related but it seems to be somewhat unnecessary at a certain point. ...

Re: New LSA to be introduced at AirVenture
Even if you wanted an LSA float plane, you would get the ICON, not a me-too ICON that costs more and doesn't have the goodies the ICON took five years to bring to market. The ICON is also a niche product. The only customer for them at the $190k level has to be yacht owners, or guys in Florida with ...

Re: New LSA to be introduced at AirVenture
I hadn't seen this thread when I went over to the seaplane base on Saturday so it was my first news and look at the thing. I'm with you guys on the whole wait for the hype to clear. The whole fishing platform just seemed over the top to me. My CFI pointed this out to me in regard to the ICON and whi...

Re: How long did it take you to get your SPL?
Our Piet weighs in just over 800# I believe. We only have a 10 gallon fuel tank. Weight does limit us to the size of instructors and students, it is sort of a running joke. There are people who are to large to train in the plane. I am by no means insecure of the time that it is taking me. I don't ru...
