Re: Corben Baby Ace D as LSA
Group effort we got a Flybaby to Oshkosh this summer for the 50 year anniversary. A couple things from that trip. Carry a setup for tail tiedown on starting. Chocked and parking brake on with nobody in the cockpit a single place A-65 airplane can go on it’s nose if the throttle is too far open. Tied...

Re: AVweb Video on Vashon Ranger + Aviation Consumer Article
That’s exactly it. engineers and designers can get their heads stuck in the sand and not look around at what has thousands of hours of fleet history to see what works and can be improved on. I just go ballistic when I see the same mistakes made over and over. Ultralights with no carb heat for exampl...

Re: AVweb Video on Vashon Ranger + Aviation Consumer Article
And that’s the rub here. I bought an early Jabiru engine, 1998, Touted at the time for reliability, fleet history and time before overhaul. Many changes since then based on later fleet experience and knowledge. But... Did the early engines make it to TBO? They were advertised as making it but I’m no...

Re: AVweb Video on Vashon Ranger + Aviation Consumer Article
The engine is interesting. I had not heard of it before. A couple things that I noticed. 200 cubic inch and 2700 RPM. Interesting the power increase but not sure if it’s from better breathing, fuel injection, cam or better spark control? The cylinders are all aluminum possibly with steel sleeves. Lo...

Re: Piper 100 vs Vashon Ranger
Vashon keeps talking about how the airplane was designed to be used on floats. But with the short fat wing and 100hp how will it work out? 100hp in a J-3 on Aqua 1500s is pretty good performer but the Vashon is heavier gross and wider fuselage. J-3 with that setup sadly has very little useful load e...

Re: Piper 100 vs Vashon Ranger
Yep embarrassed here. You are correct. With Cessna using symmetrical tips stock you would think the leading edge kits would make more difference than they do. Straight tail 150 here on the field with leading edge kit, aileron gap seals and fences. It stalls slower but the rate of climb has not impro...

Re: Piper 100 vs Vashon Ranger
I grew up with Piper Colts in the flight school 108hp O-235 power and 1650 gross. We also have had Cessna 150’s around in various years. O-200 and 1600 gross, Cessna 152 1670 gross Ercoupes at various weights and engines up to the O-200. None were what I would call rocket ships at those weights. Tal...

Class C NO radio?
Can you fly under Class C without an electrical system no radio if the airplane was never equipped?
Similar to flying under Class B no transponder or radio if the airplane was never equipped with an electrical system.
I have heard it mentioned for B to be under within the veil but not for C.

Re: Piper 100 vs Vashon Ranger
It comes down to how many mouths the end purchaser has to feed to get their low volume product. Used to be buy a Piper and the Piper company would profit. They would in turn buy parts from Sensenich, Lycoming, Cleveland, etc. All those companies would profit and continue. During the 60’s and 70’s th...

Re: April '19 Sport Aviation article "Attitude Flying"
I think I remember reading in an article long ago that Yeager said that his ultralight was the only airplane he actually owned. The rest were borrowed, he was hired to fly or were government owned.

Re: CFI checkout, is it a real thing?
The AC is for Homebuilt testing or gaining experience before testing your homebuilt but it’s similar to what is needed. Reading through the advisory circular the checklist they have is close to how I would check a person out. But the insurance policy has no guidance other than “receive a checkout fr...
