Re: Impossible Turn Was Impossible

OK - Time for my two bits again.... This impossible turn discussion has gotten interesting… The fact of emergency turns/landing has much more to do with pilot skills and what you are flying than the hypothetical altitude for the engine failure. This forum is about light sport aircraft and the flight...

Re: Mooney Diesel Two Seater Debuts

A reasonable guess might be that the Meijing Group, the Chinese real estate company that purchased Mooney, is using some of its abundant capital to simply get in on the ground floor of GA expansion in China. They are principally located in China's first 'air economic zone', Zhengzhou. So while we m...

Re: 696 Users and Data Fields

I...appreciate the time and energy it takes to design and construct a panel (been there - done that). When certain folks have a few aircraft design/build/test experiences under their belt, I might take their comments more seriously. Just to be clear, I did not build that panel - my Sky Arrow was an...

Re: 696 Users and Data Fields

I think it's silly to argue the merits of glass vs steam gauges. They both serve the same function and I don't see that one has an advantage over the other if weight savings is not that important. When you're flying and looking at the gauge for information, what does it matter as long as it works? ...

Re: 696 Users and Data Fields

Well, I can only speak for me with my 496: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7517/15749269142_06c92d229c_z.jpg Distance Next, GS, ETE Next, ETE Dest, all displayed over the faux HSI. Note my groundspeed! Hint: I'm climbing, and NOT through 2,000'! Great looking panel.. I know there are those who criti...

Re: Impossible Turn

Great pictures.. In SOCAL, don't have a problem finding a place to land - lakes are so low there is 100 to 300 feet of new dry bank all around the circumference of the lakes. Sad but true...

Re: Impossible Turn

My bird has the Magnum 601 (rocket powered). According to the manufacture, recommended deployment is above 600 ft and maximum airspeed is 138MPH. Not sure how realistic their numbers are. Nice having but hope to never need it. To answer earlier questions about off field landings, most aircraft inclu...

Re: Affordable ADS-B out

From AOPA October 28, 2014 By Elizabeth A Tennyson The FAA must address the serious concerns of the general aviation industry before pushing ahead with a 2020 Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) mandate, AOPA told the FAA administrator in a strongly worded letter. The Oct. 28 letter w...

Re: Impossible Turn

One last thought... The BRS in most LSAs compared to the Cirrus is like comparing oranges and apples.. In the LSAs, the BRS is an option - and a great one. The BRS is required in the Cirrus for airworthiness, i.e.. FAA approved Airworthiness Limitation. The Cirrus is grounded without the BRS operati...

Re: Impossible Turn

Last post on this thread for me... My main point is practice emergency landings, descents, turns, stall characteristics including high speed stalls, get to know what your aircraft and pilot skills are capable of, and make your own decision whether or not to use the chute. As most aircraft don't have...

Re: Impossible Turn

Guess there are some who don't get it.. If there is a good landing spot, then land the airplane. I have a BRS and would use it for a structural failure, hostile terrain, or night flight engine failure where no visible landing spot is available. I would not total an airframe using the BRS when there ...

Re: Impossible Turn

Despite some folks opinions, the chute should be the last resort whether it be a BRS, seat pack, or backpack chute. Thinking like that is why people still get killed in airplanes, with perfectly good chutes available to them. Sorry to offend you, but that's foolish advice. No offense taken... A chu...

Re: Impossible Turn

Thought you might enjoy watching the IMPOSSIBLE TURN. Please don't try this without proper training. This video was shot several months ago during emergency procedure training. This is a great example of the impossible turn done at 450ft. The video was shot at KSNA when runways where number 19L and...

Re: Lightning LS-1

Have seen quite a few Jabiru installations. Most with heat problems were either (1) improperly baffled or (2) lacked the cowl exit area for sufficient hot airflow exit. As a general rule during design and testing, the optimum exit is 150% of cowling entry area. Baffling to provide sufficient downdra...
