All training from Sport CFI now counts towards higher ratings

Finally, a place for sport pilot instructors and/or wannabees to talk about instructing.

Reading the timeline, when changes to 61.109 take effect, it would appear that the rule goes into effect August 27, 2018.

I didn't see anything saying "only time logged after that date counts", so I assume all time counts, regardless of when it was logged?
Since this new ruling did not introduce new training requirements, not counting previously logged time would be inconsistent with the ruling itself - not that logic and consistency is something that federal bureaucracies strive for but still ...
Enough already of your right wing bs.
Tim, you are like a ghost hunter. Ghost hunters see ghost in almost everything, because they are looking for ghost. You see right wing attacks because you are looking for right wing attacks. Maybe it's time to stop looking for a ghost around every corner.

Let it go, Tim - this is no place for political bickering. We all won on this one; let's just come together and bask in our victory.

I've just skimmed the entire 53 page rulemaking, and must say this is a major victory for us all. My undying gratitude to our own Helen Woods, who pulled together and headed up the ad-hoc committee that drafted the initial petition to the FAA, something like 6 years ago. It was an honor and a pleasure working with you, Helen, and the results were certainly worth the protracted wait.

Many of us thought, it should have been that way in the first place.

Thank you, Helen and Paul, for your contributions to that effort.

That's going to be a much harder sell, Bill. We'd have to demonstrate convincingly that such a change would substantially improve safety.

It is shame thought that it took 6 years to get such common sense and uncontroversial change thru ...
DrSeti is probably right that it will take another 20 years to get any major changes like 1540 gross ...

This is great news for all sport pilots and CFI-S folks! Stick and rudder skills can be learned on any platform (excepting of course rudderless ERcoupe) and should count! It will also, I think, make finding a CFI who might stick around longer than a few months easier to find. I have found CFI-S' generally aren't as interested in flying heavy iron and are not using the job as a stepping stone. Just my 2 cents, I might be wrong....

Who knows, after a brief review of the requirements, I might just try to get up to that level rather than just a ground instructor certificate.

Do that, Ed! Get that CFIS, and then move up to Lock Haven, and I'll hire you.

And that STILL wouldn't please the people who think 152's should be included

If the above premise is used as a standard, please demonstrate convincingly, how "All training from Sport CFI now counts towards higher ratings," substantially improves safety.

It was a tough sell, Bill, but in our original petition, we argued that it would encourage more Sport Pilots to continue on toward higher ratings. The argument was that additional training always tends to improve safety.

The problem with the FAA's mandate to improve safety is that the stated goal can most easily be accomplished by grounding everybody. So, the safety argument is a double-edged sword.
