I wouldn't necessarily call living in southern Illinois the backwoods, but I have been to several small airports where cell service was not very good and data was non existent.

Most (All?) of the cloud storage products can be configured to work in an offline mode. For Google Drive, simply check the 'Offline' option in settings. Dropbox has a similar method.

I grew up there and I'd sure call it the backwoods! When I visit my Dad, if it ain't Verizon, you ain't callin'. (to paraphrase the Boeing quip).
I did happen to be in the area for the Mt. Vernon Sport Aviation show a couple of years ago, and that was fun. Also one of the AOPA flying-in is going to be in Carbondale this year. I'd like to schedule a visit then, even though I now live within easy driving distance of their headquarters in Frederick Md.

Southern Illinois means different things to different people. To some it is anything south of Chicago or interstate 80. I am well south of there, but still North of interstate 64 in the flat ground. My main point is airports tend to be in areas where there is less population, and cell coverage will not be as good. I am 35 miles Northeast of Mt Vernon.

My father-in-law lived in Centralia, so I'm just a little familiar with the area around Mt. Vernon. If you get a chance to visit the Centralia airport the folks there are super nice. Last I knew they were training a bevy of Chinese students there so it was pretty busy. These poor souls stayed in a dump of prior run-down motel and where never seen around town at all. There was old school bus used to fairy them back and forth to the airport. A pretty grim existence for their stay in the US. I don't think the flight school cared much for the arrangement but the Chinese government was paying for it all. I'm sure it's worth if for them in the long run but it still seemed unreasonably harsh.

I grew up about 1 1/2 hours south of there, closer to Carbondale but a bit further west. I went to school in UofI in Urbana. Probably 75% of the students were from the greater Chicago area and they thought they were in Southern Ill while I thought I was in Norther Ill. So yea, it's all about perspective.

I've never flown in Illinois, other than a quick sight-seeing lesson out of Sparta. That was my first an only time to land a Warrior. I hope to fly my own plane there next summer or in the fall.

To stay somewhat on topic: Do the electronic log books provide a way to do BFR sign-offs? It seems like half the places I eat in now have you sign a screen with a finger to pay the bill. I'm wondering if the FAA will ever accept this. It seems like maybe some standards are needed.

I would say IL is basically two states .. Cook county and a few satellite counties and the rest of Illinois.
All other distinctions are rather non consequential :-)

Once we moved out of Cook county ( to Will county, just a few miles down the road ) - pretty much everything has changed ( for the better )

I guess I should have been a bit more clear, I wasn't calling where you live the backwoods. I was making a general statement that I've never flown into a grass strip in remote Alaska. That is what I meant about "backwoods". :mrgreen:

I have been to many small airports throughout Florida and Southern Georgia and have NEVER been without cell service. I do have Verizon if that matters.

Interesting.

The AC says a SP must carry “...logbook and other evidence...”

The FAR, however, says “...logbook or other evidence...”

A simple error in the AC, but it drastically changes the meaning.

Southern IL - I grew up in a small town called Sparta, between Carbondale and St. Louis. Hunter Field (Sparta Airport) was where my cousin and I hung out all the time, and when we asked / bothered my uncle enough he'd rent a Skyhawk and take us for a ride.

Close friend that I met in college grew up in Mt. Vernon. I went to U of I Urbana, sisters went to SIU Carbondale, my father grew up in Murphysboro IL.

Yes, there is running water, electricity, and cell service.

Back to subject at hand. I would think a high resolution picture of each of page of your log book with your endorsements should suffice - can be loaded on your phone as well as your I pad. Scan your complete log book on your PC/Laptop, and your carbonite computer back up would thus be off site back up.
