Can anyone recommend a ground school program or self study plan to get up to speed? I got my PPL in 1982 and haven’t flown since 1988. So almost starting over but I did 25 yrs Air Force career including non-rated aircrew, oversight of UH-1N Huey program and had some involvement with airspace and GPS aviation issues so I’ve had lots of exposure to aviation despite no hands on flying.
Checked out the AOPA Rusty Pilot course online but 2 hrs seems pretty light. Lots of online courses for sale but many of those are “teaching the test” which is OK I suppose. Looking for a bottom-up refresher before staring hands on training.

May I humbly suggest the EAA weekly webinars as a way to get back up to speed? These free 1 1/2 hour presentations, which cover every imaginable aviation topic, are available live every Wednesday evening, and on instant replay from the archives at any time. To either register or find videos of past presentations, browse to http://eaa.org/webinars.
Less humbly, I can suggest to you some of the dozens of webinars I have presented. They are linked from my own website, at http://avsport.org/webinars. I assign one of these per flight lesson to my own students, as a self-guided supplement to ground instruction.

By all means, take AOPA’s Rusty Pilot seminar. It counts for the ground portion of a BFR. Once you complete that, find a plane and instructor to start you BFR. You and your instructor will access your abilities and you can go from there.
Following the above will show you where you need to focus and save you money in the long run. Say you handle the aircraft well, but you need more time with airspace or weather. You can drill down on those or say all that is good, but you need more time behind the yoke/stick, then you follow them on that. The rule of thumb is, for every year your out, you will need an hour of flight time. In my case, I was out 6 years, only an occasional flight with friends, But only needed 2hrs for a BFR and checkout in a Warrior.
I took it slow, practicing in the Warrior while waiting completion of my LSA, which I then flew cross country CA to NY. Remember, once you ar a Pilot, you’re always a Pilot. Get the medical back, Basic Med or fly With your drivers license under Sport Pilot rules. In th end, it’s like riding a bike.

I had the Sporty's CD course which worked well for me. There was a different path for the Sport and Private CD's my set included both CD sets. PM me if you would be interested in them, my wife says I need to clean my shelves off so I'm willing to sell them at a big discount. They are 3 years old, so take that into account.
