Sport Pilot Training Counts for Private Pilot Requirements

Sport aviation is growing rapidly. But the new sport pilot / light-sport aircraft rules are still a mystery to many flight schools and instructors. To locate a flight school offering sport pilot training and/or light-sport aircraft rentals, click on the "Flight School And Rental Finder" tab above. This is a great place to share ideas on learning to fly, flight schools, costs and anything else related to training.

Sport Pilot Training Counts for Private Pilot Requirements

Post by hook_dupin »

The final rule for several Part 61 changes is out. Included is the ability for sport pilot training time provided by sport instructors to count towards private pilot requirements and for a new ability for sport pilot instructors to provide basic instrument instruction provided they have an endorsement to do so.

Also included is the ability for commercial applicants to have 10 hours of Technologically Advanced Aircraft (TAA). My reading is that the split-screen Dynons found in many sport aircraft meet this definition.

Many thanks to Helen and Prof who I know provided inputs years ago and comments on this round.

The final rule is here:

Those are welcome changes. Thanks for the Federal Register link.
