Flying photo

Sport aviation is growing rapidly. But the new sport pilot / light-sport aircraft rules are still a mystery to many flight schools and instructors. To locate a flight school offering sport pilot training and/or light-sport aircraft rentals, click on the "Flight School And Rental Finder" tab above. This is a great place to share ideas on learning to fly, flight schools, costs and anything else related to training.

Flying photo

Postby sportflugzeug » Sat Mar 31, 2018 10:32 am

Has anyone here had a photo taken of them flying from the outside by an accompanying plane?

If so, please post your photos and the cost.

Thanks.

I didn't have to pay for these, and likely not exactly what your looking for. They were more interested in the airplane than my ugly mug. I was flying for both of the photo shoots. The red and cream airplane belongs to my dad. The blue airplane was mine. The red and cream airplane just finished its second restoration by my dad, and I am teaching my sons to fly in it.

This formation pix of me flying my old Beechcraft was taken by fellow CFI Claude Goldsmith from his Mooney, close to 40 years ago. Note that you don't want to attempt this if you don't have formation training, and a clearly specified break-off plan, and somebody other than the pilot to snap the photos. Taking photos while flying is much worse than texting while driving!

Actually some of the best pilot photos I've seen were shot wit cameras, (think Go Pro), mounted to the aircraft.

None of these were paid for.

If you can't find a photographer friend or want really professional photos, I'd guess at least several hundred dollars for a pro.

Having an air to air photo of your airplane is cool and a lot of folks want that. Aerial photo shoots can be pretty intense, especially when you have a photographer giving instruction to get the subject in the right position, it's a step beyond simple formation flight. If it is something you want, I highly suggest using experienced crews. Many air show performers view the publicity photo flights as the most dangerous part of an air show. Things can go bad quickly.

I've flown the photo ship for a few shoots. Just a couple weeks ago I flew a photog to shoot an Acro Sport and One Design for Sport Aerobatics out of a 172. We always start with a detailed briefing, and depending on subject pilot experience, will walk the entire flight on the ramp before takeoff.
