Lacking patience and self-control, I was back out to Cushing Field today. Spent several hours chatting with folks and got to help a guy weigh his new plans built ultralight biplane.

To paraphrase the old rifleman's creed - "This is my Gleim Sport Pilot training Kit -there are many like it but this one is MINE!"

Gleim material is very good.
I used their book only and passed after a few days of studying with 95%.

You can't go wrong with the them , just make sure you study the actual material and not try to memorize questions.
Faa questions will be very similar in format and scope but with different numbers , figures etc ...

I've started on the FAA Knowledge Test book, after fiddling with the paper E6B and Nav plotter yesterday morning - . I've completed through study Unit 5 of the 14 so far. My plan is to now go back and review all 5 Units before proceeding to the next grouping to hopefully reinforce my aging brain cells -lol

The material is presented in a very concise manner and the self-tests after each unit are great for showing me my areas of weakness for further review.

I'm also keeping the economy moving by buying a thin plastic colorized version of the E6B that includes a unique Windspeed Cursor Arm off Amazon, and a Chicago VFR Sectional chart and a local AFD from Sporty's.

Nice going, Randy. My peeve is that plotter. So I only use it to measure distance. I found that a simple, cheap, 360 degree circular protractor was just as accurate for measuring the true course on a sectional and much easier to use. One guy I know just pulled the degree wheel off the back of a cheap cardboard E6B, and that works just as well. The best ones I've seen are RAF issue, and can be had from the internet. But it costs more to ship than it costs.

In addition to the plotter that came with the kit I have an old Jeppesen PJ-1 rotating azimuth plotter courtesy of my late step-dad who flew a TriPacer several decades ago. He's long gone now but his Cessna Pilot Center training stuff somehow made it into my attic - lol

I just finished the self-testing on the "Weather" Unit with a 97% - I'll bet cash money I'm not the first student who went through this Unit and went "PHEW!" - lol - I'm not certain I know whether or not I know weather. but I do need a fresh cup of coffee.

Looks like the next Unit on Weather Services is going to be challenging too. It's taxing to my old head-bone, but it's also rewarding to learn new things.

You'll notice it says right on the box that they couldn't fit the CFI and airplane in there!

I do appreciate the extra challenges presented by 'self-study' of these FAA test materials. Perhaps not unlike a lawyer who represents themselves - lol - but I accept them as a financial compromise between my realistic budget and my ultimate goals. I can either rent an instructor to teach me to pass the Knowledge Test or teach me to fly. I'm forced to defer my $$ (which I've yet to consolidate) for plane rental and CFI time in it.

Maybe not the wisest choice? But I'm not unique in making it -lol

One minor "success' I did find an error in the Test Prep materials - confirmed by an e-mail to Gleim. They referenced the wrong chart on a glider airport question. Had me going blind trying to find Ridgeland Airport which was actually on the chart on the next page - lol - I believe I discovered another typo a couple pages after that. I'm confirming it now with Gleim.

Other than that the materials are VERY thorough, and combined with reading sections of the other books in the kit and youtube vids, I'm progressing along. On Chapt 14 - Weight & balance now - getting near the end.

I would not go for the pricier package. I just passed the test using the regular and passed with ease. My flight school had them available and has everything you need to pass and to get ready for your check ride. If you study what they tell you to, you will have no problem with the test. Don't feel like you are alone in this journey. Aviation people are the best at helping with any subject because it all comes down to safety. Good luck and if there is one piece of advice, find a good instructor who you can connect with and trust. They want you to succeed as well!
