Using flight sim as an affordable means to learn to fly...

Sport aviation is growing rapidly. But the new sport pilot / light-sport aircraft rules are still a mystery to many flight schools and instructors. To locate a flight school offering sport pilot training and/or light-sport aircraft rentals, click on the "Flight School And Rental Finder" tab above. This is a great place to share ideas on learning to fly, flight schools, costs and anything else related to training.

Come to think of it... my process:

I stated wanting to fly helicopters.
Brought a RC heli and airplane simulator.
Brought a RC helicopter.
Brought a desktop flight sim.

On my first airplane intro flight the instructor knew that I flew a sim because I added back pressure with bank.

Continued to use sim during real-word flight training.

I did a lot of simming before learning to fly. I think the main use is in learning how to navigate and fly a pattern. Not so much for how to really fly a plane, the feel of a sim is just not the same as a real airplane. You can learn some good basics, but you can also ingrain some bad habits.
