Complex & High Performance

Sport aviation is growing rapidly. But the new sport pilot / light-sport aircraft rules are still a mystery to many flight schools and instructors. To locate a flight school offering sport pilot training and/or light-sport aircraft rentals, click on the "Flight School And Rental Finder" tab above. This is a great place to share ideas on learning to fly, flight schools, costs and anything else related to training.

Complex & High Performance

Post by MrLupin »

Perhaps a strange question but does anybody know if you have to first be a private pilot to obtain the high performance and complex endorsements? Could one who is training for his private do so in a complex/high performance aircraft and have the endorsements upon obtaining his private? Thanks!

I know of people getting private pilot certificates in both high performance and complex aircraft.

Even if it is not high performance or complex.

I seem to recall that Joe Montana's wife bought him a Malibu for his birthday and he did all his training in it.

Yeah, I believe high-perf and complex are just endorsements, so you can get them at the same time you are working on another rating. I'm assuming you'd want to make sure the endorsements are in your logbook before you solo.

I made sure my Cirrus primary student had his high performance endorsement before he soloed.

No, you do not, however you would never be able to act at PIC in a complex aircraft as a sport pilot after being endorsed as the constant speed prop keeps it from being an LSA.
