VFR Over the Top

Re: VFR Over the Top
Unfortunately, these devices don't seem to understand that in an LSA, "pull up" is equivalent to "slow down". I wish you could program it to say "terrain - add power!"

Re: VFR Over the Top
Yes… those persistent screaming warnings can be a distraction and need to be taken as situational awareness suggestions.
The pilot decides what needs to be done.
It almost seems that those instructions to "Pull Up" are inappropriate.
Just a more forceful "WARNING TERRAIN AHEAD" would be better.
On a similar note I remember a NTSB report where pilot was "ordered" by tower to "TURN LEFT NOW!!"
The pilot apparently let the urgency of the request compromise airmanship and spun the plane.

Re: VFR Over the Top
I get them all the time with my 496 wired into my intercom with a miniplug.
Easy to just unplug it if it gets annoying.
It seems like it should get automatically suppressed in the vicinity of an airport, but does not always seem to be.

Re: VFR Over the Top
I think I'm happy with the CLR button to acknowledge and disable the warning, assuming that it continues to work that way.

Thanks Richard! I'll try out your suggestion next time she starts to yell at me.

Perhaps changing the warning settings would help since Garmin sets these to be somewhat conservative.

Re: VFR Over the Top
The little warnings for which there would be tolerances are fine as is:
"Obstruction" (the occasional tower)
"Five Hundred" (on descent)
"Rapid Descent" (when you aggressively slip)
etc.
It's the BIG THINGS that would be well beyond ANY tolerance that are the issue...
flying into an airport with a mountain beside it (like Lock Haven) and having constant terrain warnings that don't stop!
Again, I think the CLR button on the 696 does the job of silencing a particular threat warning.

Garmins usually say "SINK RATE!"designrs wrote: "Rapid Descent" (when you aggressively slip)...
I would hear that a lot in my Cirrus, since I like steep approaches, and still get it once in a while in my Sky Arrow.
As an aside, with a nervous passenger on a local flight, it might be a good idea to suppress the warnings, or at least give them a head's up!
Re: VFR Over the Top
Seems to me there should be a way to make the GPS holler "Warning! Warning! Sport Pilot at the controls!" (For the benefit of those nervous passengers, of course.)

Or in my case, "Warning! Warning! Low-time pilot at the controls!"drseti wrote:Seems to me there should be a way to make the GPS holler "Warning! Warning! Sport Pilot at the controls!" (For the benefit of those nervous passengers, of course.)

In your case, Andy, though you are now a Private Pilot (capital letters), I'm hoping you remain a sport pilot (lower case).

Self contradictory.SportPilot wrote:"Warning warning, pilot has no 3rd class medical."
With no 3rd class medical, he's not really a pilot!
Re: VFR Over the Top
Actually, the FARs say nothing specifically about needing a 3rd class. They merely specify that, to exercise privileges, one must hold an "appropriate medical certificate." When exercising Sport Pilot privileges, that "appropriate" certificate is a State-issued driver's license. So, by that definition, a Sport Pilot does hold a medical!SportPilot wrote:"Warning warning, pilot has no 3rd class medical."
