Scanning for traffic - and what your eyes can't see

Sport aviation is growing rapidly. But the new sport pilot / light-sport aircraft rules are still a mystery to many flight schools and instructors. To locate a flight school offering sport pilot training and/or light-sport aircraft rentals, click on the "Flight School And Rental Finder" tab above. This is a great place to share ideas on learning to fly, flight schools, costs and anything else related to training.

Scanning for traffic - and what your eyes can't see

Post by Jack Tyler »

I didn't realize that one of AOPA's publications is a digital CFI Newsletter, which is available to all of us each month. Here's the link to this month's issue: http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/aopa/cf ... ssue1/#/15

There's an excellent, short article by Ron Machado in this issue that both explains and demonstrates what your eyes can and can't see when scanning. Seeing is - initially, at least - not believing. Quite clever and very instructive. Whole thing takes about 5 mins. Highly recommended. http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/aopa/cf ... ssue1/#/13

The clever part is in the video, with the link provided in the article.

It's amazing how *little* we can count on our senses! The TV Show "Brain Games" shows all sorts of things like the Troxler affect... and how poorly we really are as observers/witnesses.
