Rental/Instructor Rates

Sport aviation is growing rapidly. But the new sport pilot / light-sport aircraft rules are still a mystery to many flight schools and instructors. To locate a flight school offering sport pilot training and/or light-sport aircraft rentals, click on the "Flight School And Rental Finder" tab above. This is a great place to share ideas on learning to fly, flight schools, costs and anything else related to training.

Rental/Instructor Rates

Post by Chuckhhill »

Another topic got me thinking about rental rates, I want to know what other people are charging, because I have a TECNAM Bravo on lease back so am I priced right? Could I reasonably charge more? Also I'm still taking lessons so, is my instructor charging a competitive amount. Thought other people would also like to have an idea of the going rates, so here goes.

These prices are in the San Francisco Bay area where gas prices are relatively high. The school I use (http://sterling-flight.com/t/Aircraft.html) charges (per hour):

PPL and Sport Pilot Instruction: $45
1998 Cessna 172: $118
1979 Piper Archer: $110
1973 Cessna 150: $75
and my TECNAM Bravo: $99

Here's what my local FBO is charging.

2008 Flight Design CTLS- $84.00 per hour
2008 Gobosh 700S- $84.00 per hour
Instructor- $35.00 per hour

The Flight Design CTSW that I trained in cost $80.00 per hour. They also have a 1995 Piper Archer III, but I don't know what the hourly rate is.

I'm sure that things are less expensive here in the croplands of north central Ohio, so we might be comparing apples and oranges.

Chuck - here are the rates (best I can remember them) from our local FBO before it closed down a few months ago:

Cessna 152: VFR $78.21/hr
Cessna 172N: IFR $103.39
Cessna 172R: IFR $115.75
Piper Warrior: IFR $96.12
Piper Arrow: IFR $121.12
CFI: $41/hr

I'm pretty sure the CFI didn't get all the $42/hr; the FBO took part of it. Renters, including students, were also required to carry their own minimum $10,000 aircraft damage insurance, plus at least $100K liability.

And before the FBO was bought out by FreedomJets, they had maybe five hours rental (total for all planes) each week.

Thanks,

Looks like Ohio is a good place to train. Those rates are probably the lowest I've seen.

tadel001,

Sounds like you have one of the largest light sport operations and one of the least expensive.

Do you own all your aircraft?

Yes, I think we have been told by AOPA and some others that we are the largest operation doing Light Sport. We own all but one airplane. The ownership allowed us to pick the aircraft we thought were best suited for instruction and to maintain the high level of quality. It also allowed us to grow to meet demand. I think as of a few weeks ago we had 88 active Sport Pilot Students.

We have been able to keep our rates low enough to make the affordable pilot certificate a reality but still stay in business.
