Landing at the House today on the Ice, Branch Lake

I have been waiting for the right conditions with the ice thick enough. I have flown into Alton Bay multiple times. We live on Branch Lake just outside of Ellsworth Maine, close to Bar Harbor. Today was almost perfect to land on the lake for a photo op of the RV12 in front of the house. Winds calm, sunny and the Temps were – 15 Celsius on the ground (a warm day for Maine.) The ice had very little of any snow and was almost Zamboni quality.

Nice David, thanks for sharing. By The Way, can I ask, what we’re your oil and coolant temps that day? What do you see typically? It appears the RV-12 is tightly cowled, more don’t than my Sling. I flew yesterday, ground temps 21F, my oil never got above 178F and coolant 131F. So far this winter I haven’t gotten anywhere near boiling point with my oil temps.
Both my radiator and oil cooler are taped off with aluminum tape. Just curious as to what other Rotax drivers are seeing.

Similar story - I have issues getting about 180F for oil when it is really cold outside - that's even with the tape and the oil thermostat.

I have installed a shutter to keep my oil temps up even when it is five below Fahrenheit. It is fully adjustable and I can reach temps of 130. I adjust in flight and keep the temps about 220 so I have heat in the cabin. I also have a baffle that slows down the flow over the radiator that is adjustable inflight.

Thanks David, Midwest Sky Sportsmhas one for the Sling, which I’ll have installed during the next annual. For now it looks like more tape.

Are you sure it was 15 C ?
I used to go swimming at 15 C ( when I was 15 , that is ) and that ice and snow sure doesn’t look like 15 C ...

Very cool! Literally!
A friend of mine made note of the fact that humans are about 60% water. His takeaway was that there is something unnatural about living anywhere where water gets hard.
He lives in Florida, of course!

Corrected the numbers from my typos on the iPhone

Also the outside temperatures were correct 5°F or -15°C we were having a heat wave that morning.
