Flying California's "Lost Coast"--between fog blankets

This time, not another drought video. We flew to the coast--to escape the heat and 18 active wild fires--where we had to dodge the fog:

Lucky bastard! I tried to get in there last September. I got as close as 500' AGL but the marine layer didn't break in the right spots. Strange feeling spiraling down over where the airport should be, with those big King Range peaks on one side and nothing but fog on the other.

We ended up diverting to Garberville (then Eureka) and exploring around there for a couple of days.

Turns out that if we'd gotten in to Shelter Cove, we wouldn't have gotten out - the marine layer firmed up and didn't break for ten days, according to the lady at the hotel.

For all those flatlanders out there, this is what we're talking about:

Crescent City, CA. Half the field is VFR, half is LIFR.

*NEVER* trust ASOS/AWOS/ATIS near the coast!
