Crater Lake, OR

Post by chavycha »

Got a chance to do a few spins around Crater Lake this weekend in the Skycatcher. It was on my route and I couldn't help but linger for a bit. The Skycatcher does surprisingly well at high density altitudes. I was cruising at 9500 and went up to 10,000 to stay well away from the park surface. Even at that altitude (density altitude 12,500+) it still had tolerable climb performance with myself and full fuel.

Chiloquin - a nice approach but not much to see and do. There's a restaurant just across from the tiedowns, I guess.

I landed at several airports on this trip but the most interesting and challenging was Pinehurst State (24S). It's 2800'x30' strip cut into the High Cascades forest at about 3600' above sea level. Floated a tad and missed my mark by 25' or so but pretty happy with the approach all told. With the hot temps (100F), the density altitude was in the 7000' range (hence the disparity between the GPS ground speed overlay and the airspeed display). The deer hanging out on the parking pad as I taxied in was a nice touch.

And up and out of Pinehurst. According to the POH I should use 1,040' of ground roll at max gross given the density altitude. Looks like about that much, maybe a hair less, as I've still got about 2/3rds of the 2800' runway remaining.

Nice! I enjoy that mountain stuff! Looks like your performance is similar to mine.

Thanks. I've enjoyed your videos, especially the recent Mt. Shasta flybys.
