CTSW vs. GX

Talk about airplanes! At last count, there are 39 (and growing) FAA certificated S-LSA (special light sport aircraft). These are factory-built ready to fly airplanes. If you can't afford a factory-built LSA, consider buying an E-LSA kit (experimental LSA - up to 99% complete).

CTSW vs. GX

Post by jjfjr »

Hi;

Anybody have thoughts / experiences with the Flight Design CTSW and the Remos GX? Performance? Comfort? Pros? Cons?

I don't have a bunch of Remos time, but I do have a lot of Flight Design time. To me the Flight Design is more comfortable and roomier. It is also faster. The Flight Design is probably harder to fly nicely than the Remos. The biggest concern is support and parts. I know Flight Design is still in business and supporting their aircraft. I don't see anything since 2019 online for Remos. All things being equal, which in my mind they are not, support would be my deciding factor.

I have about 30 hours in GX/G3 ( did my initial training in it ) and about 1 hour in CTSL :-)
I really liked CTLS more from a comfort point of view ( which is all what you can get during a <1h demo flight ) - specially visibility is much better, I remember always struggling in Remos trying to spot any traffic in the pattern with the door frame always being in the way ( the one time it was not was in the summer when we took the doors out - it was nice )

I don't have any Remos Time, but I do own a CTSW. Any pros/cons of the two airplanes aside, as others said it really does come down to support. Remos is DOA or so close that it doesn't matter, while Flight Design is still delivering airplanes. If there were some significant damage, let's say the horizontal stab got mangled, you could order a new one from FD. With the Remos you's likely have to design/build your own stab, find one off another airplane, or give up on the airframe.

I certainly don't have anything against the Remos, it seems to be a neat airplane. But I know my CT has been very reliable and mostly a joy to own.

My flying club in Las Vegas has a pair of GXs that I've flown. Really nice planes and I'm a big fan of the Rotax 912. I ended up buying a CTLSi simply because I think they look better and have a better support network. I've had the plane three months now and absolutely love it. Not an exact comparison with the a CTSW, but I really think Flight Design is just a better engineered aircraft. However, that's no slight on the Remos. I'd first look to see who and where you can find an A&P. As this is my first plane, I've found that to be the most important pre-purchase decision to make. Make sure you line someone up prior to making the purchase. I'm fortunate to have a FD distributor at my home airport. Either way you can't go wrong. Happy flying.
