912is Sport Upgrade

Talk about airplanes! At last count, there are 39 (and growing) FAA certificated S-LSA (special light sport aircraft). These are factory-built ready to fly airplanes. If you can't afford a factory-built LSA, consider buying an E-LSA kit (experimental LSA - up to 99% complete).

912is Sport Upgrade

Post by cogito »

Have you heard anything more about the 912is Sport upgrade? My understanding is that the parts will be provided free for us current owners, but labor is on us. CPS says Rotax indicates it'll be an 8 hr job. What I find strange is CPS also says the work includes changing out the clutch in the gearbox. From the press release I thought the upgrade was all about a new airbox and intake runners.

Any of you heard more details yet?

thanks,
Craig

The 912is upgrade is free. It is only a swap of the computers and the airbox. It is being proposed at a 4 hr. job. Originally the parts weren't supposed to be available until Sept. - Aug. That's a wait and see. It will certainly improve the 912is performance with torque and HP.

Thanks Roger, let us know when you've done your first upgrade.

Will Rotax keep making the 912ULS, or is that engine going to be phased out in the next couple of years?

Rotax says they will continue to make the carbureted version.

With 20 lbs less weight and $7000 less in money I expect there will be continued demand.

The update will include new intake runners, air box and gear reduction clutch. the ECU may or may not be replaced. They are still deciding.

We have been told it will be late summer before the parts are released and to expect 8 hours labor.

The 912ULS carb version will be around for a long time.

Have any of you done, or had this upgrade done to your iS yet? I ordered my upgrade kit a month ago ($3,000 but CPS says i'll get that $ back,) but the parts aren't in the US yet. Also, CPS tells me they have to ship my ECU to the one place in the US (in Florida) that has a level 4 USB connector for the firmware upgrade.

For an 8 hour job, on a free upgrade, this is getting costly and taking a long time.
