Ground Handling with Differential Braking on Ice

Talk about airplanes! At last count, there are 39 (and growing) FAA certificated S-LSA (special light sport aircraft). These are factory-built ready to fly airplanes. If you can't afford a factory-built LSA, consider buying an E-LSA kit (experimental LSA - up to 99% complete).

Ground Handling with Differential Braking on Ice

Post by Dennis »

Hello Group,

I wanted to fly my Skycatcher this morning as the runways and taxiways are finally fairly clear and the snow banks are low enough so my wing tips will clear.

But the patchy water from the melted snow has formed black ice and I'm leery about taxiing and take offs and landing with differential braking my only means of lateral control once the rudder loses authority.

I had flown my Skyhawk off of slippery snow and glare ice with no problems. Any suggestions for the Skycatcher in these conditions?

Fly safely and often (so far as possible this winter).
