Comments after a RV12 demo flight

Talk about airplanes! At last count, there are 39 (and growing) FAA certificated S-LSA (special light sport aircraft). These are factory-built ready to fly airplanes. If you can't afford a factory-built LSA, consider buying an E-LSA kit (experimental LSA - up to 99% complete).

I could not tell what part of the country you are in from your profile. But you have a ride in the Philly area if it is easier to get to. There are 2 12s on the field at KPTW.

Mitch is a great guy and would give you enjoyable flight.

My oversight... will fix momentarily. I'm in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, close to Charles Town, but Harper's Ferry is the better known close town.

Mitch and I exchanged a few emails last summer, but we couldn't work out a date. Will try again.

I'll have to drop in on you, Bruce. I fly down to NRAO Green Bank (WV52) every summer, for a radio astronomy conference (and to use their 40 foot dish). What's your nearest GA airport?

You are closer to Mitch, but if you are ever in the area let me know

Martinsburg (KMRB) and Winchester (KOKV) are the closest to me. I'd like to make it up for Sentimental Journey soon. Maybe this year. Is there a place for a travel trailer on site? Might be a good excuse for a camping trip.

IIRC Dr. Shuch made a disturbing comment in his review about crosswind limits being rather low. Having been stuck at Mustang island with 20 knots cross-wind that had no intention to abate at any time of day, I started to pay attention to it. My current airplane does not have a demonstrated limit, but I expect 7 knots at best (it stalls a 30 mph). It's extremely inconvenient. I tackled 18+ knots crosswind component in Remos GX and I expected at least 18 from RV-12. Otherwise, what good is it for travel?

As we all know, demonstrated crosswind components are "demonstrated" (as during the certification testing) and not the actual ultimate control limitations of the a/c. And of course we are talking about pilot skill here, not just limits as a function of an a/c's design. As a counterpoint to Paul's observation, I flew with Mitch at Sebring during a previous Expo when the tower's short-final wind check was a direct (90 degree) 15 G 20. The RV-12 was under complete control during the entire approach and with a good landing. Based on what I saw, I'm pretty confident the design's ultimate limits are higher than that. In any event, it's somewhat academic to be talking about RV-12 (or other a/c models' ) crosswind limitations is a finite sense without folding in the variables the individual pilot brings to the equation, including familiarity & experience with the a/c, currency, skill level, and so forth.
