Multiply 45 by 12, get 540 Watts. Ron said that about 1.7 hp is used up, presumably due to inefficiencies in the alternator. Considering that driving a compressor directly usually takes 6 hp on a compact car, this is amazingly efficient. You bet I can spare 1.7 hp to make wife happier. Also, the system is off for takeoff and landing, for safety reasons. As I understand, there is no clutch, however.
