As far as FAA paperwork is concerned, processing a Sport Pilot certificate is no different from processing a Private. There is absolutely no FAA paperwork involved with processing a DL; the pilot operating under SP rules just carries one; doesn't have to register it with the FAA. A 3rd Class medical, OTOH, must be processed by the FAA every two years. Your fee goes to the AME, not to the FAA.
