I saw the XF-85 "Goblin" sitting in the experimental hangar at Wright-Patterson AFB. It was the only airplane in the entire Air Force museum that made me say: WTF!?

Some test pilot thought it would be a good idea to climb into that thing and FLY IT.

I heard Rutan speak at Oshkosh this year. He said the Boomerang was his design that he was most proud of. I can see why -- designing something that doesn't look like it should fly at all, and actually flies GREAT, is quite an achievement.
