Hey Fellow Pilots:

Here's my latest video creation, which took me to the current limits of my editing and production skills:

Once again... Excellent video. I'm going to try this on my next CC.

How do you set up the phone reminder? Timer? Text?

Figure the time your flight will be in minutes. Before you take off, hand someone your smart phone and tell them how many minutes and that you want a random minute (and thus time) set on the phone's vibrating alarm clock! If the phone doesn't have an alarm clock, download a free app for one!

Then, just put the phone where you can "feel" the alarm going off--at the engine-out point!

There's a couple of other methods, too. I'll wait to post these, until I see if anyone "bites" on my "contest" to describe them.

Used the randomizer for an upcoming 50NM CC flight. It came back with a 49. LOL. Should be a piece of cake.

While I was watching your final scenario, I was thinking "transferring ownership of aircraft to insurance company in 3....2....1"

Rich, I noticed the brief text message in this video about you experiencing five previous off airport landings. Seems like there might be a few lessons hidden away in that number. I can only claim two, altho' one produced an interesting 'repair and rescue' and both produced a number of lessons learned. Maybe you should start a thread along the lines of 'What I learned when I crash landed...' or some other form of red journalism and no doubt some others here could add their misadventures. Might be one of the more valuable threads for learning about the real world.

Another great video - thanks for taking the time.

As a data point, in almost 40 years and 6,700 hours, I have never had a forced off-airport landing.

Always aware that that can change at any time, of course.

The handful of times I've had engine issues, I could always make a runway with the power remaining, or got it restored somehow.

Again, your videos are a valuable contribution. Keem 'em coming!

I have had one unintended off airport landing, and some other situations which required a landing do to a problem. None of them were crash landings. Just because he has made off airport landings doesn't make them crash landings.

Hold short, guys. I am sorry for my sloppiness with terminology and inferences, leaving the misinterpretation that I'd experienced four or five off-airport forced landings.

Actually, they were all emergency returns to the runway when power--or partial power--was lost on take-offs. And they all resulted from the same cause: "stuff" (usually including rubber) in one or both of the carbs. All of these emergencies occurred in the first 400 hours I flew my airplane; none have occurred in the last 850 hours, because of the lessons those first 400 hours taught.

And those lessons, were: (Stand by--until I get back from flying)
