This guy did a great job. Flew as far into the crash as he could. Hearing his breathing it was like being there.

He flew it successfully all the way to the crash site.
My question-in the light sport I could see see the runway below him. Why not set her down there?
I saw a road off to his right. Were there telephone poles or something?

Count ONE Mississippi...TWO Mississippi...THREE Mississippi...

That's how long the "deer in the headlight" brain freeze takes, on average.

Always factor that in when you think about what you might or might not have done in any particular situation.

He says that he was at only 200 feet and that he fought hard the urge to turn back (which would have been disaster.)

Unless you absolutely know otherwise (for sure), it's always best to assume that roads have unseen wires paralleling or crossing them. I'll take a field over a road most times.

My new routine on run up. Where am I gonna put my baby down if she chokes. I have it all in my head. "over there on that long green spot on the golf course" at Aurora. The long road going south just north of the airport is always full of cars and trucks and there are telephone wires. So if I didn't consciously look and decide a year ago then I might have chosen the road to deadly result. So, I recommend as a low hours pilot that you should, as part of every run up, say out loud to yourself IF I HAVE TO PUT HER DOWN I WILL LAND ON XYZ.

That's a great thing to have in your checklist, Dan.

Dan, I fly out of W29. Check out my options if departing on rwy 29. I can assure you I will be getting wet. Great shots on google earth. I also fly my flights on google earth before hand. Makes things much safer in my opinion

W29. Wear fins on your feet and swimming suit in case of an off airport landing!
