RALEIGH – Small aircraft pilots, as well as the general public, have the opportunity to visit the Wayne Executive Jetport in Pikeville on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the annual pilot safety fly-in co-sponsored by the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation.

Pilots will have the opportunity to receive flight training, attend education seminars, visit vendors, fly flight simulator aircraft and view vendor aircraft.

This event is a cooperative effort between the Division of Aviation’s Safety Section, Wayne Executive Jetport, Wayne Community College’s Aviation Systems Technology Department, the Federal Aviation Administration Safety Team, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base’s Fighter Safety Wing, the Civil Air Patrol, and the Wayne Executive Jetport Pilots Association.

Some of the events at the fly-in include:

Seminar by noted aviation speaker and author Mark Grady titled, “Back2Basics,” which will educate pilots on common accident factors;
Other seminars including Flying with the Right Attitude: The Totally Responsible Pilot, Portable Electronic Device Interference, Aircraft Performance Factors, Aircraft Maintenance Publications, Take Offs & Landings, and Mid Air Collision Avoidance;
Seminars such as “Learn to Fly” and “How to Save Money on Flight Training” will provide information for novices and would-be pilots;
Pilots will be able to fly with a flight instructor to meet FAA required bi-annual training. By attending specified seminars and flying with a flight instructor, pilots can earn an FAA Wings Award, which substitutes for bi-annual training; and
A flight competition to see who is Eastern North Carolina’s “Top Gun” pilot. Aviators will test their skills in takeoffs, landings and other practical flying maneuvers for the 2012 Eastern NC Top Gun trophy.

During lunch, a Master Pilot Award will be presented to local pilot James M. Cooper, recognizing his 50 years as a FAA certified pilot. There also will be a demonstration showing how wildlife such as a hawk is used to deter other birds from flying near or on airport runways.
