Just Plane Fun Fly-In, Brasstown, NC

Fly-Ins are excuses for pilots to go somewhere and eat. Airplanes. Food. What else could you ask for? Know of an upcoming fly-in? A great $100 hamburger? Don't keep it a secret. Share it here!

Just Plane Fun Fly-In, Brasstown, NC

Post by MrMorden »

I usually cross-post trip reports between here and the CTFlier Forum. I forgot to post my trip from last weekend, so here it is!
----

Today I went to Brasstown, NC to a Highlander oriented fly-in. It was held at a small 2200ft private grass strip in the mountains. Quite a fun place I have been to a few times. I landed a little long, but it was otherwise decent:

Here's the takeoff. I always do a soft field takeoff from grass to save wear on the nose gear. I usually level off and build a little speed before climbing out, but in this case the airplane started climbing immediately at close to my normal 60kt climb, so I just let it.

There is rising terrain ahead, so we made a left turn out. There's a ridge there that you can either climb over or turn parallel to. I have climbed over it when solo, but this day with two up at midday, turning parallel seemed prudent.

Thanks for posting Andy! I had planned to attend, but weather and work conspired to keep me away this year. I'm hoping to make Triple Tree this weekend so hopefully that will make up for missing it! Still have a long way to go before my Highlander gets airborne!

Cross-posted for those not on the CT forum:

Things were winding down a bit today (Sunday)...

I can imagine a cartoon Just SuperSTOL pointing and laughing at a CT with 6" tires and saying, "HAHAHAHAHA! You call those tundra tires!!!" (In its best Crocodile Dundee accent!)

But tell me I don't look right for one of these puppies:

Flying back we flew over the new casino in Murphy that's due to open soon:

I hate gambling, but it is bringing a lot of jobs and money into this rather depressed area of NC. Hope the good outweighs the bad.

Hey Michael, I'll catch you at Triple Tree if the weather cooperates. I plan to be there Saturday morning until Sunday around noon.

Andy,

Just watched the videos.

Nice landing and glad to see you keeping your slipping skills honed!

On the north takeoff, I did a 45º right crosswind to stay over that valley. I think that's a little bit more prudent and allows a shallower climb angle to clear terrain if things got iffy.

Good job overall, though!

Thanks Eddie. I always end up having to slip into that runway. There's that hill with the house and barn on it at the base-final turn point, and I'm reluctant to get too low over it. No need to buzz 50ft over some dude's house, though I think a lot of other pilots do it.

My set up leaves me a little high, and I already had my 30° flaps in, so a slip was all I had left to get down. Maybe next time I'll fly base inside the hill and get lower. And/or use the 40° flap setting.

I hear what you are saying on the departure. My buddies and I have always turned left out of there, and there's plenty of clearance if you turn parallel to the ridge, about 135° turn from the runway, as seen in the video. That said, the right probably does drop off faster and get you breathing easier more quickly.
