Thanks Jack.. Good info. Adding in a certified GPS source and certified transponder are required, but nowhere is a certified altitude encoder required. Many aircraft such as mine use the Dynon D100 EFIS which also provides altitude encoder data to the transponder. I contacted Remos to ascertain what they are suggesting/approving. Their response was "wait & see" as there are holes in the current rules as written. I have ADS-B-in already and appreciate the traffic info while in the LAX 30 mile veil. A stand-alone system which occupies minimal panel space is my best option - but I will wait and see what changes are made and what comes on the market to fill the void. Thanks.. Don

I recently purchased a second hand Garmin GDL39. This is my effort to get some hands on experience with this new technology. My thought is to eliminate my subscription to XM weather and benefit from free TIS. I got my first real chance to try it out on my trip back from KLRO. The weather worked as well as XM weather, the traffic was "spotty". It seems that for good traffic information you should have ADSB-out. I'll stick with the "big sky theory" for now and keep my eyes outside the cockpit.

There's a goldmine out there for the first company like Stratus to introduce a $1k portable ADS-B In/Out solution. I don't care if it's WAAS or not at this point.
