Of course. It's never lupus.

It was very worthwhile.
And thank you for answering one of my questions on the Q&A, at the end. :)

Professor,

I'm about an hour in - informative and relevant as usual.

One thing I think you misstated at about :53. You said an engine operating at 50% power would run its tach about half speed.

I think that's wrong. That would be true if 50% power was achieved at 50% of the full power RPM but I don't think that would ever be the case.

For instance, in my Sky Arrow, full power at SL would come at 5800 rpm, though limited to 5 minutes.

But 50% power at SL is around 4100 rpm, a long way from the 2900 rpm which would cause a theoretical tach to run at half speed.

So, 50% power is obtained with only a 29% decrease in RPM, and hence tach time.

Right?

Prop pitch plays a big part.

I can realize 50% power at 5,500RPM and WOT if I climb high enough to cross the mountains.

Maybe you missed my point.

It was that 50% power would not be found at 50% rpm, nor would the tach reading be running at half speed at that setting.

I got your point which included altitude as a variable to determine that the reduction could be far less than 50%. I pointed out that prop pitch is involved as well and provided and example where the drop in cruise RPM could be as little as zero.

You're absolutely right, Eddie. I meant to say an engine turning at 50% RPM for an hour would register only a half hour on the tach. I was trying to underscore the difference between performing maintenance by tach time (which Lycoming and Continental allow) and Hobbs time (which Rotax requires). At no time did I intend to imply that 50% RPM = 50% power (which it does only under rare and extreme cases). Sorry if I was unclear about this.

Was there ever any question???

I can be a bit of a stickler for things like that.

And people who can't help inserting a "ta" into "preventive" when used as an adjective!

My momma and her momma before her were self-described "comma hounds", and I guess the apple does not fall far from the tree.

Still, if this is a seminar you give repeatedly, you might want to tweak (or is it twerk?) the wording of that section, just to appease anal retentives like me!

Unless they're talking about preventative maintetenance.

Yeah, I always suspected we were brothers.

Wings and AMT Award credit

Post by drseti »

For those of you catching my EAA webinars on the replay, it turns out that there's an easy mechanism for you to receive FAA Safety Team credit toward their Wings and AMT Award programs. Here's how:

Watch the webinar videos on EAA.org.
Log on to your faasafety.gov account with your username and password (or set one up if you haven't already done so).
From the Activities, Courses, Seminars, and Webinars pulldown, select Activities.
Under Search Activities, in the Keywords box, enter the event code. Here are the event codes for the two EAA Webinars I've done so far.
LSA Maintenance: EAA-20131126
Stepping Up to LSA: EAA-20130911
Click Perform Search.
Click on the title of the webinar you watched.
Click the Request Credit button.
In Accredited Activity Validation screen, enter date you watched the webinar.
Select me as Validator by entering my last name: Shuch.
Click Search.
Click Submit for Validation.

Did I say easy?

Forgive my ignorance, but...

...what are the benefits of doing so?

I have, in fact, seen your "Stepping Up..." in person and your LSA Maintenance one yesterday.

1) You can use the Wings program to take the place of the full blown flight review (still referred to by most as your "biennial").
2) Some insurance companies give discounts for participation in the Wings program.
