912 uls very hard time to start

Postby restlinbaum » Sat Jan 30, 2016 12:49 pm

I have a 2009 912uls with 1070 hrs. Both carbs have been serviced about 3 months ago. First flight of the day crank and crank but nothing, and if I add some choke it backfires nothing else. I have replaced the battery, and after it finally does start up works fine all day. Starts right up before every flight. It has never kicked back, and has always been a smooth running engine. Any suggestions?

Have you replaced your ignition modules yet?

When my first CT hit 200 hours I sent the carbs out for inspection and service. When they returned the airplane wouldn't start, and choke had no effect. Come to find out the starting carburetors (chokes) had been installed wrong. The left choke was on the right carb and vice versa.
It might be worth a look if the problem started with the carb service.

With 1000 hours, Fast Eddie probably identified the culprit.

Try the "ice test".

I was think it was the 2006-2007 engines that was having ignition module problems.

I have not had them changed out, since there has never been a problem. I will have the carbs looked at first then move on to the modules, as it started after the carbs were serviced.

Take the top cowl off, put a bag of ice on the ignition modules for about 15 minutes. If the engine starts right up after that, you need both ignition modules replaced.

Thx. So far, if I let the airplane sit for 30 minutes or so it starts up normally. I think I'll try the timing light test next time it won't start. That should show whether or not the ignition modules are faulty. Right now the problem is very intermittent.
