Any health requirements from insurers for Sport Pilots?

Post by tu16 »

It is well known and widely advertised that Sport Pilots are not required to have FAA medical.

However is this true for insurers? If you are just Sport Pilot license holder, never applied for FAA medical (or had it lapsed long time ago) - is it practical/possible to be insured as is? Would insurer demand some health certification beyond Sport License? Or jack up rates significantly?

I'd appreciate the opinion of insurance specialist - as well as to hear real world experience with insurers from SPs who are not PP on this subject.

Thanks in advance!

Alex.

On my insurance application, there was a place to enter dates for current medical certificate. I marked 'none' and wrote in the comments that I did not renew my last medical because it was not required for exercising sport pilot privileges. Did the same thing on the renewal application. They issued the policies with no further questions on the topic.

I have a Commercial license but I cannot see why someone with a Sport Pilot license would be treated any differently.
