Drat......
Sorry - thought I might have had a glimmer of hope there for you.....
If you're still stuck in a few months, I'll come over and be your Guinea pig. Don't worry, I wouldn't think of making the exam interesting, such as pretending to hear voices in the middle of the oral exam, having Dominos make a delivery 20 min into the test, etc.....
Sport Pilot DPE shortage

Re: Sport Pilot DPE shortage
That's a very kind offer. But I hope to be well past all of this by the time you're ready. (Which doesn't mean I wouldn't be happy to be your examiner when the time comes.)

On a more serious note, I assume you can't be both the CFI and the examiner to the same person?

But you still get evaluated every year. At least us AFS-610 appointees do.drseti wrote: The first year, yes. After that, they have the option of appointing you to a two-year term, and you only have to do all that half as often!

Entirely correct, Bob (even under AFS-650). And, as to the previous comment: my FSDO informed me today that, under the new FAA Order 8000.95, appointments will remain at just one year, for all DPEs.comperini wrote:But you still get evaluated every year. At least us AFS-610 appointees do.
That's the bad news. But, stand by for the good news, pending later tonight.

Re: Sport Pilot DPE shortage
Interesting.. we are on two year cycles.. that doesn't mean much, except different paperwork, and the online course once every two years. I do need to fly with my POI every year though, and they do observe the oral. Being a 610 designee, I have no geographical limit as to where I can do tests. I don't need permission from a FSDO to operate in their kingdom. I assume you are restricted to your FSDOs area (unless permission is granted to operate outside of your area)?drseti wrote:Entirely correct, Bob (even under AFS-650). Re: Sport Pilot DPE shortage
You assume correctly (although, given the Sport DPE shortage nation-wide, I don't think such permission is likely to be withheld, if someone out of the area requests me, and is willing to pay my travel costs).comperini wrote: I assume you are restricted to your FSDOs area (unless permission is granted to operate outside of your area)?

Re: Sport Pilot DPE shortage
Did your applicant decide they were ready, or did you find another guinea pig?
Re: Sport Pilot DPE shortage
Neither, Tom. The FSDO inspector took pity on me, and very kindly appointed me, with the proviso that he would observe my first actual exam.3Dreaming wrote:Did your applicant decide they were ready, or did you find another guinea pig?

Re: Sport Pilot DPE shortage
Much to my surprise, they did include CFI-S on the Certificate of Authority I received yesterday - but only for renewals, reinstatements, and category/class add-ons. I expect they'll add initial CFI-S exam privileges at my first DPE renewal next year.Hambone wrote:Congrats, Paul!
As a DPE-SP, can you give the CFI-S checkride?

Re: Sport Pilot DPE shortage
According to the specialty examiner branch your DPE would not be valid for category/class add-ons. You would be acting solely as an instructor in that capacity.drseti wrote:Much to my surprise, they did include CFI-S on the Certificate of Authority I received yesterday - but only for renewals, reinstatements, and category/class add-ons. This came up when I had a question about doing an add-on for someone who didn't have a current flight review.
