leithalweapon,

with all due respect i'm sure you are wrong to focus on the 20 hours. it is only a minimum amount of time you must have before you get a chance to demonstrate you skills and only if you are ready and have an endorsement.

the important thing is that the student is ready and qualified and even if he is he still has to prove it on his checkride.

your right to the extent that in most situations the student isn't yet ready at 20 hours.

my first homebuilt was a "fat ultralight", today a lsa. it had one seat and i flew it when the buld was complete. i had no time. it worked out fine and granted i didn't fly with a passenger i did demonstarte that time needed to solo ( and be ready for a checkride ) is different for different student pilot/aircraft combinations.

If you're going to compare apples-to-apples, don't forget that 40 hours for PPSEL isn't any more realistic than 20 for SP. I think 60/30 is probably more realistic, and that still puts SP at half the time of PPSEL.

Are you the one that keeps pushing the motor glider? If I wanted to fly a motor glider then I would. I don't like motor gliders. If it was the only thing I could fly then I might consider it. NOT.

No, not me. I think motorgliders are way cool, but I've never flown one. Maybe someday...

I like SP over PPSEL largely because of my bad experiences with training. I basically started over three times. I ran out of money the first time, ran out of time the second (heavy overtime at work), and the third time I went through 4 different instructors because they kept getting "real" jobs and disappearing on me. Of course each instructor made me demonstrate all the manouvers all over again.

It took me over 100 hours to earn my ticket. I would've been eligible for SP before I had to stop the second time, might even have made it through the first time.

BTW, when I was training I flew at least twice a week. I highly recommend this. But above all, once you start you should NEVER, EVER stop. Borrow the money if you need to, put it on your credit card, but DON'T stop!

No, I'm the motorglider guy and here is why:

1) They are inherently safer, you are rarely flying anywhere where you can't simply glide, unpowered if in engine failure to an actual airport.

2) They have the lowest fuel consuption.

3) Some can still cruise at or near 120kts. (7-8 hours endurance)

4) Today's motorglider is more of a hybrid between glider and airplane. The very popular Katana trainer is 14:1 which is the most for any GA aircraft, I know of. (C152 is 9:1)

5) sport pilot glider 10 hours and no solo.

6) sport pilot glider CFI 25hours PIC beyond SP.

I fly 2 motorgliders one is configurable 30:1 or 26:1 the other is 18:1...which makes it almost an airplane.

The biggest problems with motorgliders is that everyone hates or disrespects you. The Airplane people think gliders are toys, and the glider people think motorgliders are an abomination agains the purity of a "real glider" :)

I aways remind the airplane people that all airplanes are gliders, just some are not very good gliders....the spaceshuttles glide ratio is 1:1.
