International flight in a LSA?

Post by mcjon77 »

Hi guys,

Great to see the forum back up. One of the things I would like to do with my aircraft is fly it south into Mexico and North into Canada occasionally. I wonder how many of you would be comfortable making that trip in an LSA and which LSA would you chose. I know those Indian Air Force pilots just flew around the world in a CTSW, but I am asking about an average private pilot doing international flying.

i would be comfortable enough, question is where/when is it permissable. i know the bahamas permit LSA but i don't think that canada and mexico have begun to permit them.

it will take permission form mexico and canada to fly your LSA in their airspace.

Interesting. So I guess having an America N number doesn't absolve the aircraft from other countries flight regulations. Do you know people that have flown (presumably from Florida) to the Bahamas?

it isn't the N number or but compliance with ICAO standards where LSA comply with ASTM.

someone on this forum, before it was hacked posted about flying the caribbean in lsa.

Right now, I do not believe you can fly an LSA in Canada, but when I was there a little more than a year ago, they had a committee looking at adopting LSA from our rules verbatim, and that would lilely solve the issue. You might be able to get some sort of special permit now, using the rules for experimentals.

Practice filing and closing flight plans before you go up there though, they are pretty big on doing both.
