Rent dual only?

Post by AviatorCrafty »

Curious what you guys think here. So my current situation is I haven't flown in an LSA in about 6 months because I've been training towards my Private Pilot - Glider rating/upgrade, and I'm in the very last bit of training but have been wrestling with the weather and have had to reschedule my checkride twice now. Naturally I'm ready to get back into airplane flying since the whole time I've been flying gliders I've gone no more than 5 miles away from the airport to remain within gliding distance since the timing of my training is when there's virtually no thermals, so I miss being able to explore and fly places.

Now a bit of background for context to the question: before I started gliding I drove an hour and fifteen minutes to a flight school with a fleet of Tecnams to fly since the flight school I got my sport certificate at sold their Cessna 162 a few days after my checkride. I was fine with the arrangement for a while but over time got tired of the drive, which was a driving factor to start glider training since the gliderport is a 45 minute drive instead. However during my glider training, and even before then, I would google flight schools in my area just searching to see if someone ever managed to pick up an LSA, and to an extent someone did during my glider training. I found out an airport close to where I trained originally had a new flight school pop up, with a fleet consisting of a piper Cherokee and a J3 cub. The J3 they have has some mods such as PA-11 wing tanks and a 95 hp engine, and could be solo'd from the front seat. I almost instantly sent them an email asking if I could rent the J3 on my sport certificate (possible insurance problems), and after getting my tailwheel endorsement of course. They responded back saying for now the cub is dual only because it has to be hand started. Now the question is, once I finish my PPL-Glider training, in your opinion, should I rent the cub dual for $150 an hour and being closer than where I was going before or go back to renting solo for $144 an hour now since they increased their prices and drive an hour and fifteen minutes?

TL:DR
Rent dual for $150 an hour in a J3 located ~40 minutes away or drive an hour and fifteen minutes to rent for $144 an hour and still be able to fly solo.

Learn to fly the J3, and get your tailwheel endorsement. Also learn to prop the airplane while you are doing your training. Maybe they will allow you to fly solo after they get to know you. After you get your endorsement then you can decide what you want to fly.

When I had my J3 I taught everyone who flew it how to prop it, and I allowed them to fly solo. Most only did local solo flight after they were checked out.

My flight school LSA is down for major repairs, I found another flight school, they have a Cub and I will be training on it when the weather gets warmer. Both places are at least one to one and half hours away.
My advice is fly what ever makes you happier, makes the drive less of a burden.

Go fly the Cub because it is a Cub. Get the tailwheel endorsement. See from there. Renting dual only would get old for me once I knew how to fly the plane. It will be spring soon and that is the best soaring season so don't worry about silly motor planes until summer.

If you talking about the LSA at KHFD (Hartford-Brainard) it's back at Learn2FlyCT and open for scheduling starting on 24Feb. I also use that LSA for my training and have had to put it on hold because of the repairs. I am also about an hour away, so I have to take into account the commuting time for the schedule days. DM if you have any questions about scheduling or looking for info on the plane.

Thanks
