Garmin purchases FltPlan

Post by foresterpoole »

I got an E-mail this morning from FltPlan which confirms the story link below, it appears Garmin has purchased FltPlan. As an Android user, these two app's were the best for my platform. Obviously, Foreflight is top of the market, but it appears Garmin is trying to make a play for non-iOS users. I have used both the FltPlan app and Garmin Pilot. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, Garmin was subscription, FltPlan was free. Garmin has a better interface for pulling up general information about airports, but the georeferenced airport diagrams in FltPlanGo were free and very useful (garmin charges for their "safetaxi" service). I'm holding my breath since my Garmin Pilot subscription is up next month, I pretty much decided to let it expire and fly with FltPlanGo which has a somewhat less refined interface, but was fine as long as you knew it's quirks. If I was Garmin I would most likely transition away from the free aspect and roll it into a subscription service....

Take a look at iFly GPS before you decide. I've used them all and iFly is by far the best IMHO. I have the VFR, IFR, multi-platform subscription. That allows me to use it on 4 devices including Surface Pro 4, iPad Mini 4, iPhone 6S Plus, and Nexsus 7. iFly will be releasing a major updated version within a couple days.

FltPlan Go also has both VFR and IFR charts (all georeferenced) and much much more and you can install it on 10 different devices if you want. And it's FREE. A EFB that offers all this for FREE is worth taking a look at. Hopefully Garmin won't muck it up and start charging users for every little feature. I'm a ForeFlight basic user with the $74.99 annual subscription but have used FltPlan Go in the past.

FltPlan Go Features include:
Geo-referenced Approach Plates, Taxi Charts, and
Airport Diagrams for the U.S. and Canada
Approach Charts on Maps
AirDrop
Custom Waypoints (including CSV, KMZ, and KML imports)
SIDs and STARs with transitions displayed on route
AirDrop
Instrument Panel
Split Screen (not available for iPhone)
Auto-syncing of NavLogs, Routes, and Weather
Airport & FBO Information
Fuel Prices
Moving Maps
NavLogs
In-flight Weather
Animated WX
MOS Weather
Weight & Balance
Documents
Binders
Flight Tracking
PDCs
eLogbook
Calculators
Scratchpad
Aircraft Checklists
Breadcrumbs with Enhanced Playback
CAP Grid
Measure Tool
Cloud Tops Tool
Spotlight Integration for iOS 9
Emailing, Printing, Annotating of NavLogs
Howgozit
Transfer routes from AOPA Flight Planner

I've used FltPlan Go. I don't like it. I would rather pay for something I like than use something I don't like because it's free. I merely suggested the OP take a look at iFly. He is already using FltPlan.

Just an update, I've been using Avare now for 6 flight hours and love it. It's free, it's pretty straight forward, and the deal maker was the ability to load ESRI shapefiles into it. No one probably knows what that is, but it's a very high power geographic information system (think Google Earth on steroids). I use the software every day for surveying and data analysis, so I can flight plan on my work desktop, pack it up, send it to my tablet and presto, I'm done. I'm a big fan now....

Only issue is the radar (not all that great) and weather data integration. I use the Windy app and flight service, so it's not even a big deal.

My iFly GPS auto-renews next month. It's more than worth the price to me. To each his own.
