Quality Sport Planes in Cloverdale, CA is the west coast representative for Zenith Aircraft, and has an annual "open hangar day" in May every year. The local Lions Club cooks burgers and hot dogs for lunch, and a number of airplanes - mostly LSAs, but also some E-ABs and beautifully restored classics - show up. This year there were the usual Zenith 601 Zodiacs and high wing 701 STOL and 750 STOL and Cruzers, but also a couple of RV12s, a Jabiru, a Glastar, and a Cessna 195. The crowd was friendly, the food was scrumptious, and the weather was sunny and warm. It was a fun day.
Three CH601XL-B Zodiacs on the flightline:
Here's a short video recorded Saturday during the event by Sebastien Heintz, president of Zenith Aircraft.

Thanks for posting Stan, looks like a great time. I love these type of events. Looks like you did have beautiful weather as well. Always good food and good people.
My girlfriend and I try to make annual trips to California's wine country and we've been to the Russian River Valley area wineries. All up and down the 101 in that area and we were just south of Cloverdale on our last trip. We even did a Route 116 wine tour. Beautiful area.

We've thought about selling our place in San Francisco and moving up to Sonoma County somewhere between Petaluma and Cloverdale (Santa Rosa and Healdsburg are between them). The weather is damn near perfect and the area is gorgeous. I frequently go for long bicycle rides up that way on mostly rural roads without much traffic, and the scenery is awesome.

You cycle too, I knew I liked you. I rode my first century recently and just did a 70 miler 2 weeks ago up in St. Augustine here in Florida.Scooper wrote:We've thought about selling our place in San Francisco and moving up to Sonoma County somewhere between Petaluma and Cloverdale (Santa Rosa and Healdsburg are between them). The last time we were out your way we rented a VRBO in Petaluma. Great little downtown area. We explored much of Sonoma County, it is just beautiful. And they make wine there. We drove up through Santa Rosa on our way to some wineries in the Russian River valley. We also went hiking in Armstrong Redwoods Park, what an amazing place.
We passed a few small airports in the Russian River area. Those vintners must have their own aircraft with all those small airports scattered in Sonoma County. Living the dream.

I was born and raised in Jacksonville, and still have a lot of family there. St. Augustine was right down the road (US 1 or A1A, take your pick). My sister is a registered nurse and lived in Dunedin for about ten years before her husband got transferred to Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque. Dad spent his career with Arnold, Schwinn & Company as regional sales manager in the southeast U.S., so bicycles are part of my DNA. Until the last couple of years, I did the AIDS/LifeCycle charity ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles every year.

I grew up in Gainesville so Crescent Beach was my beach of choice and St. Augustine was second. My girlfriend and I were just in Dunedin last weekend at the farmers market. Also a great little town.
Your charity ride looks like a great event and a beautiful ride through California. Although, it makes my century look like a trip around the block, thanks.

I also was raised in Jax (haven't decided yet where, or if, I'll grow up). West side of town, area called Wesconnet, not too far from Cedar Hills. Graduated from NB Forrest high.
My folks moved out to Middleburg when they retired, and I go up regularly to visit.

Small world. I lived in Lake Shore on Lake Shore Blvd. a couple of blocks from Blanding Blvd, and Cedar Creek was my back yard. I graduated from R. E. Lee H.S. in 1960, and my younger brother (16 months younger) graduated from Forrest.Half Fast wrote:Scooper wrote:I was born and raised in Jacksonville, and still have a lot of family there. My mom graduated from Lee, probably around 1958 or so.
I once knew your area well. If you recall the old Westside Atlantic Bank, near the intersection of Blanding and Wesconnet Blvd, my grandad was VP in the 60s. I used to fish Cedar Creek and Fishing Creek and McGirts Creek as a kid.
