How would you interpret this paragraph...

Each pilot exercising sport pilot privileges must carry his or her logbook and other evidence of the required endorsements from an authorized instructor on each flight. Other evidence of the required endorsements from an authorized instructor may be a preprinted card or record that includes the endorsements. Refer to § 61.51(i)(3).

To me it sound like we need to carry our logbook , the way student pilots do when they solo ....

I use Safelog (SafelogWeb.com) on my phone, tablet and desktop. All devices are synced and with my phone and tablet are always with me while flying.

My instructor endorses in a paper logbook and I take a photo of the endorsement and attach the photos to my Safelog. The data is stored in the cloud and on each of my devices - much safer than a paper logbook. The software also keeps track of currency requirements.

It works great for me as I am not a fan of paper unless absolutely necessary (but that's just me - because I'm a semi-retired software engineer).

Yes, you need to carry logbook or proof that you have had any endorsements needed that were not required to actually get your Sport Pilot certificate. Those would be proved by the fact you have the certificate. I think the endorsements you will need to prove are Vh, airspace, and tailwheel pertaining to the specific flight and airplane you are flying at the time.

§ 61.51 Pilot logbooks.

i)Presentation of required documents.

(3) A sport pilot must carry his or her logbook or other evidence of required authorized instructor endorsements on all flights.

I think I get Warmi’s question.

When my medical expired, from that point on I was “exercising Sport Pilot privileges”, in spite of the fact I hold a Commercial pilot’s license. That sort of makes it sound like I should have been carrying my logbook for all those hours.

I don’t think that was the intent, and now with BasicMed, for me it’s a moot point.

Yes, I agree. If you have a Private, Commercial, or ATP, those endorsements do not apply. I have multiple logbooks and those endorsements are not in any of them.

Yes , my impression was that carrying logbooks on every flight was basically something only student pilots had to do but it looks like this is a requirement for Sport Pilots as well .... I doubt many are aware of this requirement

On a separate note, are you going back to flying certified planes now that you have your basic med ?

I think all Sport PIlots would be aware of this because it is something they would learn as part of obtaining their certificate.

Not much. I did give Flight Reviews in a Mooney and a Cessna 120. Though I think that as long as the pilot’s Flight Reviews were not expired, I could have done so without BasicMed.

But I have friends with certified planes that I may now have opportunities to fly. But I’m pretty darn happy with my Sky Arrow.

Neither (multiple, including mine) instructors nor the DPE I had my check-ride with, were aware of this requirement
Frankly, I doubt' many Sport Pilots on this forum are carrying their logbooks with them cause it seems nobody is aware of this ...

Doesn't bother me at all , and I do carry Garmin Pilot's based electronic version , but it seems like just one of these rules ( like the Vh one ) that most instructors aren't aware of...

Absence of any specific description of what is acceptable FAA evidence, a picture on your phone or a paper photocopy of the endorsements would suffice.

It's part of the FAR's for Sport PIlot. How can they not be aware of it? Are they aware they can't fly IFR or at night?

Don't know - maybe because most of them are instructing PP pilots and are just not all that well versed with the Sport Pilot side of things ...

That may be true, but the applicant should know everything in part 61 and part 91 that applies to him. He should not need his instructor to tell him everything.

No argument here .. just making sure other SP are aware of this requirement ...
