There is no fee to pay the federal government to the keep your pilot certificate. Some states may have a registration fee, like Illinois. They used to be every year, then went bi-annually, and now it is a one time registration.
Aircraft on the other hand are renewed every 3 years. The good thing, if there is such a thing, is that it is only $5.

Flight Instructor Certificates are the only pilot certificates that expire and must be renewed every two years. Pilots just need a flight review every two years.

Yeah $5 buck is just amazingly low. Given IL finanancial trajectory ( straight to hell ) , I can only hope this won’t change.
Ironically , the fact that aviation is, basically, dying out , may actually shield us from any rampart tax increases - there is simply barely any money there to be taxed to begin with.
Frankly, in IL It seems like all aviation related requests are handled by one person, Linda Schumm - and she is probably bored half the time anyway :-)

The $5 I was referring to is federal. For aircraft in Illinois you have sales tax a one time 6.25%, and bi-annual aircraft registration of $20.
