Samsung Galaxy Tab A/AVARE

Post by HAPPYDAN »

Dinosaur Dan here; You know, the guy who types with 2 fingers and still carries a flip phone? 2 tin cans and a string? OK. A pilot friend felt sorry for me recently ( a Millennial, of course) and decided I needed schooling on the latest and greatest tech stuff. He saw me using an E6B and a Seattle Sectional, and smugly commented "There is a better way now." His advice was to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7" screen, and download AVARE from Google Play (Free!). I didn't understand any of it; I thought he was speaking Martian. So I got one. Well, 4 days in and I am AMAZED at what it will do. Flight planning, moving map, updated Sectionals, too many features to list. And internet access also. Now I need to transition from Cyber Dummy to Cyber Savvy. Can an Old Dog really learn new tricks? Time will tell.

Dan

I've been running Avare on a Galaxy tablet for a little over a year now. Love it. Helps keep cockpit clutter to a minimum and makes flight planning a breeze. I keep a backup on my phone.

So far, so good with me. Can you recommend a good, updated tutorial I can access? Step by step, if possible? A couple of UTUBES were helpful, but I don't have the all same screens or buttons he has. The AVARE website hasn't helped much either. The AP I downloaded is so updated, it even includes obscure private dirt strips not on the sectional or in the A/FD. Sweet!

Sorry but I don't know of any other tutorials or documentation. It's one of the shortcomings of freeware.

Welcome to the 21st century! The capabilities of the new portable electronics are amazing.

I'd recommend you also get the free trial versions of Foreflight, Garmin Pilot, WingX and iFly. All of them are great, but every person is different and each seems to find an app they like best and just "works" for them. Good luck!
