Location is far more important than surface - unless it's gumbo. Then surface condition is everything.

I'm not sure we are disagreeing here, Jim ... I think a well-maintained field is better than a poorly-maintained one, and I sure wouldn't want to base my new LSA at an airport with a runway that's really short and with close and high obstacles ...

Having said that, I didn't mean to imply that turf was bad unless you met certain criteria; I was responding to the initial post concept and explaining why I chose this particular airport over a paved, busy, GA airport inside the Houston Bravo ... ultimately, it's up to the pilot to find the right spot for his/her aircraft and his/her mission. What suits a J-3 for some pilots may not suit others with a different airplane.

All relative. But I am surprised at how much I like flying off the turf ... I thought I would miss the PAPIs/VASIs and all the stripes/numbers, etc. But I don't - I love landing on my 100' wide grass runways!!!

Cheers!

I have trouble imagining a hundred foot wide grass runway :-)
I do agree that longer is better.
In an O-200 J3, 300 feet is adequate, but I prefer at least 600.
In a 160 hp Cherokee, a 1100 feet is adequate, but I prefer at least 1500.
