What does this mean for Rotax Engines?

I was told the 94 MON avgas they have available now runs fine in the Rotax. In the long run it will mean that there will be unleaded fuel available at local airports for those running Rotax engines.

The announcement is a little vague regarding where they are going to sell the fuel. We know AVfuel has 600 of their own locations, and distributes to 3,000 in all, but how many of those will be getting the new fuel? All of them? Only the largest customers?

Hmm...I did a search on the Swift Fuels site using their "STC" tool, and found that Flight Design is listed as "ready to fly" with the new fuel. But is it? The "ready to fly" label is based on it being non-certified and thus and not needing an STC, and that the octane is above that required by the engine.

BUT:

Has Rotax approved this fuel for the 912UL/ULS/iS engines? Has Flight Design approved it for use in the airframes?

Since any change to an S-LSA requires manufacturer approval, and fuel type is a pretty big change, this seems a kind of gray area since it's not a modification or equipment change, so to speak. Hard to know if it's legal (not to mention wise) to use without a specific manufacturer blessing.

Rotax has approved ASTM D7547 and ASTM D4814 (via the Fluids SI) and SWIFT 94 MON meets ASTM D7592, D7547, and D4814 (as per their website) so there shouldn't need to be additional specific approvals, unless an LSA manufacturer doesn't defer to Rotax.

Is there a published list of airports with Swift 94 MON? I know KSEF has it, but I'm not aware of any others.

AvFuel has teamed up with Swift fuels to deliver 94 MON with a 98 AKI rating. I gave them a call today and spoke with Nick Correll, fuel marketing and sales manager, giving him a list of six airports within a 50 mile radius of my home airport.

If we all do the same, this fuel may become readily available within a short period throughout the country. Hopefully other FBO's will see the benefit of installing a tank to accommodate this new fuel.

Many sources say the 102 octane may be available in 2018 or soon there after.

Yesterday I spoke to Nick Carrell from swift fuels. He stated that in a few weeks they'd have a airport map locator of where the 94 Octane E0 can be purchased.

Until then he suggested to use this site for Airports with mogas.
