Pilot's Age

Post by RTC'83 »

Can a person older than 65 be a PIC if flying with a PP or a SP license?

Absolutely... Many of us are "Have Medicare Card - Will Travel" age. My late father passed 12 days before his 94th birthday and was flying as PIC a week prior to his death. I know quite a few late 80's pilots flying warbirds at CMA. VR.. Don

Up until very recently, there was 92 year old flying around Florida in his Eclipse Jet.

I forget the whole story, but a year or so ago, he found he was a little behind the airplane.

Here's a 98-year-old....

'Read about an 80-something year old getting his license just recently somewhere.

Visited with an 80+ pilot who flew into Burning Man. Still flying his P210, but couldn't get insurance any more... self-insured.

I believe the 65 rule you're referring to is related to the airlines. Either an ATP regulation/limitation or ALPA rule? Not general aviation.

Yes, there's an age limitation for Part 121 (air carrier) operations. Used to be 60. Recently extended to 65 only if the other pilot in the cockpit is under 60.

There is an organization, The United Flying Octogenarians (UFO's), that is open to any pilot over the age of 80, who has piloted an airplane as a PIC. I am a member, along with about 1400 of my friends.

I have a decade to go, David, but I'm definitely planning on joining. :)
