International Flying as a Sport Pilot - Canada

Post by N918KT »

Just only curious, but in the regulations they say that a sport pilot cannot fly outside the U.S. unless you have prior authorization by the country you wish to fly into. So far Bahamas is the only country outside the U.S. you can fly as a sport pilot on a DL medical but what about Canada? How do you get authorization to fly into Canada as a sport pilot on a DL medical? What is the process for getting authorization to fly into Canada? Is it a case-by-case basis or does Transport Canada have to do a blanket authorization for all sport pilots?

I don't believe it is possible to fly in Canada (or Mexico) without a medical. And there is debate on whether a person flying under Sport Pilot WITH a medical is allowed. 10 years after the inception of Sport Pilot, and there is still no reciprocal agreement. It makes you wonder what will happen, when and if the the No-medical Private ticket gets implemented.

ByDanJohnson.com article from Jan 31 talks about LSA in Canada... confirming a medical is needed. A special form is needed to fly a LSA into Canada, but the $100 fee has been recently waived.

Thanks for the reply! Not only a medical is needed but also a private pilot certificate. They don't allow U.S. sport pilots to fly into Canada even with a medical, just like you said.

OTOH U.S. pilots flying under SPL privileges do fly into Canada, following the normal eAPIS and arrival reporting requirements, as we saw just this past summer. The 'wrinkle' seems to be that while TC has the PPL/Medical rule, the Customs & Immigration folks aren't well informed about it.

That's interesting. I never knew that the Customs and Immigration agents weren't aware of it.
