A (hopefully not too boring) trip report...

Post by FastEddieB »

Thought I’d bore you all with a little trip report, complete with photos and a video.

As background, though the little Sky Arrow gets flown fairly regularly on local flights, checking my logbook we had not been on a long cross country in over two years. Always mean to, never get around to it.

In addition, Karen has friends in northern Indiana that she enjoys visiting. So, we waited for a giant high pressure system to park itself over the route of flight and planned a trip up.

Originally planned to leave last Thursday, but both logistics and strong and gusty forecast surface winds near our destination led us to put it off a day, as seen here:

Image

Pretty sure I could handle those winds, but waiting a day was The Most Conservative Action.

Still forecast to be gusty Friday, but here we are getting ready to leave Copperhill:

Image

The trip up was fairly uneventful. We had to stay very low to avoid strong headwinds. Even at that we had about a 15kt headwind, dropping our TAS of about 90K to groundspeeds around 70-80kts for the most part. Made a fuel stop in Frankfort, KY. The forecast moderate turbulence did not develop, though on the second leg thermals made for a bit of extra work.

Things sure do flatten out once you leave the hills of KY:

Image

Our destination was a private grass strip near Syracuse, IN - Wawasee (4IN9), very convenient to Karen’s friends there. I had called the owner and received permission to land and tie down there*.

Here’s a video of our arrival with a flyby first, and two landings - one our initial arrival and one after a sightseeing flight on Saturday:

Feel free to comment on why my engine died on the runway!

In any case, the same high was still parked in the same place on Sunday, and it was one of those rare occasions where the winds aloft appeared ideal:

Image

Sure enough, 41kt tailwinds at 9,500’!

Image

When the mountains come into view, I start to feel at home again:

Image

Two legs up with headwinds of 2.8 and 2.9 hours hobbs, two legs back with tailwinds of 1.8 hours each.

Let me just say it was a wonderful flight. I did not miss having traffic onboard, multiple glass screens, an autopilot or 3-axis trim. Primary navigation on the 496 with the iPad for sectionals was just fine - I can’t see how more would be better. More than 18 gals fuel capacity would be nice, but after 2 hours we’re usually ready for a pit stop regardless. Already thinking of a trip down to FL soon.

Finally, re: the debate over owning vs. renting…

For me, there’s no denying the feeling of pride to have my little plane purring along, knowing it was ME who has done the lion’s share of the maintenance and repairs and mods over the last several years. Not saying that renting might be the more rational choice for some, but for me owning is an integral part of the entire experience - one I would find lacking in a rental plane.

*The little strip is for sale for about $310,000, including one large hangar. Here’s who to contact:

Nice write up, pics, and vids! I keep thinking I'll make the trip up North to visit my parents in the Ercoupe. I haven't worked up the courage yet. It is nice to see all the potential spots to land (and live through it) if the big fan stops turning when you fly in the Mid West. A grass stip is on the to do list as well, I'm eyeballing the glider port in Benton. BTW I like the sweatshirt your better half is sporting

Eddie (and Ms. Eddie), congrats on stretching your legs again. As I recall, your previous long trip was out west several years ago, yes? You reminded me of our first trip after getting back into a Grumman, also to Indiana, to attend a wedding. What fun to fly over (almost 'through') the tiny community of Urbanna before landing at the (also tiny) local airport. It was a bit like arriving in a space ship.

Re: owning and the increased utility it provides, I simply remain amazed we can own a plane no more costly than a sports car and yet routinely cross the country in it...and for less $$ than flying commercial, tho' certainly longer. This summer I 'commuted' between Jax, FL and Bozeman, MT (~1750 NM) four times, 3 of the trips with us arriving in the morning or by noon of Day 2. Trip #4 required two full days as it was just me and the pooch, and pooches who put up with lots of air miles deserve lots of sniffing time at the stops. And some stops become so uniquely memorable, another feature of flying longer distances. On trip #4 the standout was Savannah/Hardin County Airport in TN (KSNH). It's managed - in a very attentive, very hospitable fashion - by Ms. Montille Warren, who's in Tennessee's Aviation Hall of Fame, a LCOL in the CAP who's mentored over a thousand young cadets, and who keeps the airport and the FBO absolutely neat as a pin, down to the clean water bowl and dog treats. Montille has been involved with and then overseen that airport since 1980 - can you image?! What a kind, helpful lady and what a nice place to catch one's breath.

I really enjoyed the write up and video of your trip, but as hard as I looked, I couldn't find the boring part.

The Sky Arrow is a fun machine, I imagine traveling in it is very cool!

I'm with Eddie, I just got finished flying across 80% of the USA with essentially the same equipment. It is everything you need to make some pretty ambitious flights with no drama.

Thanks.

Karen gave me this link for the sweatshirt:

Looks like it may have been a limited run, but it's a start!

I just ordered one for Muriel. If enough of the rest of you place orders, they may well run another batch.
